Hello Geeks

Hope you guys can help? I recently took on a self employed Nail Technicain. As I have just taken over the salon, I am new to the whole managing thing?? I never went through what what the nail technician should/should not be doing (as I really didn't have a clue myself). The other day I seen her doing a pedicure on a client. I am now having a self employed beauty therapist who will be having her own room. She has asked about pedicures, but don't know what to say to her. The nail technician only has a nail station at the front of the shop and I found it unprofessional for her to be doing a pedicure in front of the whole shop with no privacy to the client.
What do you guys think. Where do I draw the line with the Nail Technicain in regards to Pedicures. She does Manicures and false toenails, so should this include pedicures? It's the reputation of the shop and I need to get it right!

Thanks everyone!x

God that's a very tricky situation.

You should have had this conversation with the Nail tech before she started.

I'm sure she just assumed that you knew, as a Nail Tech she'd be doing Pedicures.

You could either have a chat with her and explain that you would prefer if she didn't do them as the other girl will be doing them (I'd be upset about this if I was her to be honest with you)

Or just explain to the new girl that you have a tech already that does pedicures and get a screen for the nail tech for some privacy if you don't have a spare room.

I'm sure you'll be glad come the summer when there's a big demand for Pedicures.

Ask if she does Minx and Gel or L&P overlays on the toes... these will be very very popular in the summer and your clients will be thrilled

You need to get a treatment list from both the nail tech and the beauty therapist of exactly what treatments they offer. Im a beauty therapist and I do pedicures, nail extensions, gel overlays on fingers and toes and manicures.

If the girls take their own bookings and get their own clients like i do there shouldn't be a problem as they aren't fighting over clients that way and therefore are both ok to do pedicures.

You need to also check that other treatments dont clash as well if there is a problem with them both doing pedicures. For example the treatments i mentioned before and also if they intend on retailing products such as nail polishes.

Thanks very much for the replies. I will take into account evething said and I will have a chat with both of them to sort the situation out. It has been alot of trial and error but I have learnt so much in a short space of time.

Thanks for the advice on the nails, I will pass it on to the nail tech.

much appreciatedx

I think you need to have a discussion with the nail technician and look at the contract she has with the shop. Since she is there first, I think the salon does have an obligation to her. The last salon where I rented space as a nail technician, I did manicures and pedicures too. A beauty therapist joined after me and she rented a room for beauty but since I was already established I continued to do all manicures and pedicures.

If I didn't have an appropriate area to carry out pedicures I wouldn't have done so. However, your nail technician appears to be happy with her working area and has already established herself so I think there should be some compromise in her favour. Is there not another more suitable area where she can undertake pedicures.

Good luck!
