My niece had her extensions sewn in by a new salon and as I'm interested I had a look at how they were done. The thread they use is like a clear, fine plasticy thread, the sort you see in the sewing section in asda. Is that going to last with shampooing/drying/styling?
I'm not an extensionist (is that a word?) but I do work alongside a very experienced one so I get to pick up little things from her. She's away at the moment so I can't ask her and thought you lot would know!

if its nylon it should last

i had some done by my hairdresser friend once, were not extension professionals so she just sewed it in with wool and they lasted and looked great for about 2 months!! anythings possible haha...

Wool! I used to plait funky coloured wool into my hair when going through my glasto/hippy stage in my teens!

So can any thread be used? I presumed it had to be specialist thread as my co-worker always gets hers from a supplier?

hiya its called weaving thread its thicker than the usual sewing thread i use this method for extensions and sometimes i put wool in along with the hair to strengthen the cornrow or sometimes i use synthetic hair to strengthen it.its a really good method and can last 8-12 weeks only downside is in between the rows or tracks as some call it where your own hair is you need to remember to brush and condition that area as sometimes you forget your own hair is under there lol xx
