Hi Geeks...this may seem like a dumb question but I just gotta know... Have any of you heard that one should NOT shave their legs 24 hours prior to having a pedicure done?

I have heard this several times but not from what I would consider a reliable source and I just wonder what you all think. Is this something I should tell clients to avoid?

Thanks for your help.

But I ALWAYS shave immediately before a pedicure knowing the poor therapist will be in such close proximity to my legs! In fact I've been in such a hurry a couple of times I've only shaved half way up my shins in the hope of a foot and ankle massage only ha ha ha ha ha xx

i knowthat if you shave your legs and then get certain products used, they can cause a rash and it can hurt...

i tried this with my mum when i were first training!

it was a scrub i used though....maybe wasnt as gentle as i should have been!

:)

In general, it is recommended that you not shave 24 hrs before a pedicure, this is true. If you look at your skin under a microscope after shaving, it looks like a million tiny cuts. Theoretically, one could develop an infection in one of these cuts, hence the recommendation to not shave. Unlikely, but still good to be safe. This stemmed from the woman in Texas who died after receiving a pedicure. She had severe diabetes and cut herself shaving and didn't know it. She had a pedicure (probably an unclean one), an infection started and because she didn't have a lot of feeling in her legs, she went septic and died. Obviously an extreme case, but apparently feasible. More likely, people will become red and irritated from the hot water, products and friction of a leg massage, but that is reason enough to advise clients not to shave a day before their pedicure. Many will ignore it (I tell all clients about this) and show up saying they just couldn't bear me seeing their hairy legs! But then it is their own fault. :)

Thank you all for your replies. I really appreciate the help!
