Hi everyone

I was giving a lady a pedicure yesterday and just as I was going to apply sea serum to a huge callus her skin kind of split open. I didn't even touch her with a foot file!!!!! it's like she flexed her foot and it split. It horrified me. There was no blood or anything, but I was a tad shocked. I didn't smooth any calluses on that foot. I just gave her a solar oil pinkie to take home. I told her to apply it liberally. She said that the hard skin had been bothering her for months in that area. It didn't hurt or anything. Is there anything I should have done?

really knocked my confidence. I am already scared that I will hurt someone with that foot file then this happens.

Thanks

Sarah xx

Did you tell her to seek medical advice?

Difficult to know what this actually was without having seen it myself. If it truely was a callus with no bleeding or pain or tenderness, then I would have treated it. I would have filed it and smoothed out any sharp, rough edges at the crack, followed by lots of moisturizer and then retailed a solar pinkie to her.... not given it to her. It would also help to know where on the foot the callus was?

I can appreciate this may have knocked your confidence and perhaps I sound a bit bold, but your confidence will come with experience, so don't knock yourself .

If the callous was really thick and has been bothering her then she might need to see a podiatrist to have it debrided with a scalpel. After the bulk is off you could always treat her as usual afterwards.

Sounds like to me you did the right thing. Even if it was not bleeding I would not have put her foot back in the water because her skin was open. Too often we ignore this and it is an open door to getting an infection that could be serious. We are not doctors and are not allowed to treat or diagnose. Definitely refer her to see a podiatrist to get proper treatment.

I told her to see her Doctor. I think she is coming back in today to get her hair done, so I will ask her how it all went.

Thanks as usual for your advice.
