Hi Geeks ...

I'm in a slight pickle ...

I started college last Sept part time one night a week doing NVQ Level 1 Hairdressing.

Since being constantly bored at college & feeling like the 4 hours a week I spend standing around like a dried out lemon have been a total waste of time, I feel that the cutting & colouring side of hairdressing is not for me.

Should I carry on studying my NVQs if I know cutting & colouring doesn't interest me?

I want to train in Bridal Hair, Hair Extentions, Sienna X Spray Tanning, Threading, Eyelash Extentions & Barbering but my local College doesn't provide these courses. Does anyone in the Staffordshire/Manchester/Birmingham region know of any accredited & highly reccommended courses within these subjects?

I'm always unemployed at the moment so funds are extremmely tight

Research is all I'm capable of doing atm

If you want to do barbering or extensions, then you will need your NVQ hairdressing. Most salons want all rounders even in barbering, as a lot of barbers do extensive colour work on men now.
For extensions, you will need to be able to cut, understand the hair structure and be able to colour you extensions and colour match to the natural hair. You need to have the fundamentals under your belt to execute the more specialist work correctly.

If you don't like cutting women's hair then what makes you think you will like men's? My gents are fussier than most women!

If it's not for you, then cut your losses now, as not only will you be wasting your time on something you don't like but your efforts and achievements will be poor. This could in turn affect your confidence with future training.

Good luck, whichever path you choose. :)

Thanks Donna :)

I understand that I need to know hair structure etc for future training but thats just my problem ... I've not been taught anything within my NVQ at College. We've done no theory whatsoever apart from the difference between surface & penetrating conditioners.

College in my eyes is very slow paced (if not snail paced!) & I believe its not the way I am capable of having fun, learning & practising. In actual fact, I dont have any fun, I dont learn & we NEVER do any practical work.

We basically stand around for 4 hours one night a week :(

Am I missing something? Is the training THAT poor? Am I better off searching for better trainers that offer NVQ Hairdressing?

I think your training may be poor. Most people would go in on a level 2. Level 1 entry is normally for people who are slower at learning and picking things up.

Look around for a full time course. They are normally 3 days a week, so you could still work to support yourself.

Thanks again Donna :)

I certainly won't be calling the College I attend now to study full time as I know a friend of mine has had the same problem as myself even on FT.

I have two local colleges & the other provides a course City & Guilds 'Intro to Salon Services' which runs over the Autumn term for 14 weeks & basically gives an insight to Hairdressing & covers : Customer Service, Salon Reception Duties, Personal Presentation, Health & Safety, Introduction to Hairdressing Services, Basic Perming & Colouring

After this I can jump to NVQ L2 Hairdressing which runs up to 72 weeks FT & covers:

Health & Safety
Giving a positive impression
Shampoo and Conditioning
Cutting Hair
Style and Dress hair
Colouring hair

Optional units include:
Perm
Reception
Promotion
Effectiveness at work

If I go back to College FT I can claim ALG (Adult Learning Grant) which pays £30 a week dependant on attendance so basically it's like EMA :) ... With ALG I can still work PT too !!

I'll call the College tomorrow for more information on days at college etc so I can look for work to fit around College :)

Thanks Donna for your advice, I don't think I would have given FT College a thought :)
