The most important thing to bear in mind with mehndi is health and safety - make sure you use genuine henna powder and never "black henna", which often contains the synthetic dye para-phenylenediamine, which can cause severe allergic reactions, chemical burns and permanent scarring.

If you want a black design, there is a product called Jagua that is made from an Amazonian plant that is safe to use on skin.

As for training, I am sure I have read of colleges offering short courses in mehndi design - so maybe you could initially enquire at local colleges to see if they offer any courses in this?

Once you have grasped the basics (health & safety, how to mix henna paste, application techniques, etc), a lot of it then is just down to artistic inspiration and practice...

Hello

I have had great training with Henna Garden. The lady who does it, has been doing it for years and she came to my house to teach me.

I was taught everything from making paste, knowing when to use henna and then going onto do designs etc.

They had included a kit, which was great cos i wouldnt have known where to purchase the stuff!!!

The address is www.henna-garden.co.uk. I highly recommend this person. :)
