Hi Geeks! My mom mentioned there was a story on our local news stating that women who have gel nails are getting cancer due to the UV lamps being used to cure the gel. In all fairness, I did not see the story, so I can't comment on it.

Here's my question. Even tho I believe UV lamps are safe, should we, as professionals, be offering sunscreen to our clients, if not aplying it before UV treatments?

Thank you for your responses!

I appreciate your mom being worried by this kind of story, but that is all it is .. a story that has circulated about 4 times in the last 15 years or so.

There is no proof whatever to this 'story' and it has been proved that you get more exposure to UV from the sun when walking to your car from your home, than from a UV lamp that is curing gels.

However if I got a NERVOUS client to whom this was of great concern then I would do whatever she wanted and use sunscreen if it made her happy. Otherwise, I would try to educate them.

Isn't it UVB that comes from a lamp and UVA that burns?

I might be completely wrong though lol x

Completely wrong :D

It's more complicated than that. You cannot get a tan or any form of dangerous UV exposure from a nail lamp!!! Lamps emit UVA and that is the least harmful of all the UV emissions.

As Geeg says, if clients worry, then educate tham

Thanks, all for your responses. I think I'll keep a tube of sunscreen on my station 'just in case'. :)

I don't think it would be a good idea, the client would need the sun screen before they went in to the light .... Even avoiding the nails as much as you could you know what clients are like?
Lifting here we come... Lol
If your really worried you can get clothing made out of material that doesn't let UV through maybe get some finger less gloves? Lol
Really though I think it is not nessecery , (Sorry I cant spell that word and spell check isn't helping LOL)
If they are that worried about it give them L&P ,
