I work in a salon, which is very popular. We have to do full sets of sculptured nails within 1 hour. I have managed to get my average time down to 1 hour 10. This is acceptable to the manageress. I am only paid a little above basic salary per week and am at the salon 45 hours a week. One girl was fired because she was taking 1 hour 30 to do her sets of nails. Now she has found a shop to run her own salon and wants me to join her on a self employed basis or we could perhaps sort something else out. I am not sure what to do. Do I stay or do I go? Is there anyone out there in the UK working in someones salon on a self employed basis. How much do I pay in tax etc and is it worth it? Would you rather be employed or self employed?

This cant be the only reason your boss fired d other girl! Is her wrk to standard? Ask urself could you wrk wit her? I dont think i cud take the chance with leaving a job your secure in, knowing you will get paid at the end off the week, due to the way the world money flow is at the moment! All sounds great being your own boss, but its not always what its cut out to be! Im happier being employed for the moment!:green:

I think your boss is insane to demand you do a full set of sculpts in an hour!

I agree! It takes me something close to 2 hours to do a full sculpted set (I have to take my take to get it right, LOL!).

It can be done BUT takes a LOT of practice.
Often sculpts can be faster than a reblance.... particularly an old/banged up rebalance.

There should be other issues to consider, before making the change.
I personally prefer being my own boss BUT there is less security in that, AND in the beginning, I was pretty much in debt.... everything I earned was either already spent from initial investment of products/equipment/courses/advertising OR it was being reinvested for MORE products/equipment/courses/advertising............

Only you can answer the question for yourself, and it depends on if you MUST have a minimum income on a regular basis and what your budget is, and if it allows for a period of struggling to get started..

Hi, I totally agree with VHunter. I work for myself (I rent a room in a hairdressers) and am self employed and I wouldnt have it any other way, but that suits me because I currently only work a couple of days a week as I have two small kiddies, but I can up my hours once they are at school. Anyway, like said, it depends on if you need a fixed salary every week/month, and how much you have to start up. I find its better being self employed as you can choose hours, days you work, overtime if you like etc etc... But then again, Ive been self employed for a few years now (not just in nails) and I couldnt have to answer to anybody! I think your boss was a bit harsh for firing somebody for not being able to complete an set within 1 hour, it must put a lot of pressure on you. Just try and decide all the pros and cons for each and at the end of the day, just do what is best for you xx
