Hi,

I've recently decided that I want to become a self-employed nail technician, and am trying to decide which course to do.

I've found this one on the Michelle Porter website (the 2 day beginner acrylic and fibreglass course)

ewd-stoke-on-trent-nail-training-courses

Would this course be suitable, or does anyone know of any other courses that would benefit me more?

Thanks

Hi im newbie too, I have just recently taken a foundation course with CND. Its a 6 day course and i must say i found it brilliant, besides the actual application of products, they explained the theory behind both the nails and products very well. But even after the 6 days you dont know everything there is to know, it really is just a foundation course. Already i want to save up and do the course after that one because there is so much more to learn, even 6 days is not long enough, never mind 2 days. During the course one of the educators told us that in Russia CND run the same course for 18 days (students sleep there and everything) and i can really see why, id have love if my course had been that long!.

Anyway its just my opinion but i just know that it took almost 2 days for us to go through the theory alone and its really important. I wouldnt waste money on anything shorter, thats just me though.:)

in a word NO i dont think it is enough unless you do more courses before you treat people
to learn all what you need to learn in 2 days is simply not enough, and if you need to ask if its enough theres obviously alarm bells ringing for you already

2 days for 2 systems is not enough. It could be good as an introduction to nail technology but no more than that.

If you are planning to be self employed you'll have no support from experienced technicians.

Do lots more research on here to get a better idea of how to start

julia_james,
I am new to this website, and did not expect such a rude response from you.
If you re-read my post, you will see that I asked if the course would be 'suitable,' not if it would be 'enough' for me to become a nail technician.

I also explained in my post that I have only recently decided to become a nail technician, and was asking if the course that I mentioned would be 'suitable' for me, especially with me being a beginner.

I did not at any point suggest that I would do that course, and then begin working immediately. Who on earth would be able to have a complete career change in the space of 2 days?

I came to this website expecting support, and the other 2 people who have responded to my post have been supportive.

I think you should read posts properly before leaving negative comments.

Murnettie, the CND course sounds brilliant, I've just had a look on their website. It is quite expensive but it's reassuring that it takes 6 days and obviously covers quite a lot. I'm going to have a look at the course dates and see if I can fit it in around my full-time job.

Mum, thanks for your advice. I will definately consider it as an introductory course, it's just difficult to know where to start, as I've never done anything like this before.

I would be grateful if anyone else could recommend any other courses that I could look into.

Thanks

Well it is expensive but well worth every penny and what you get for your money is invaluable. Also you get enough products in your kit to cover yourself for a while so you really do get value for money xx

To be honest I don't think the CND courses are that expensive when you consider what you get for your money. I've done a Brisa conversion with them and if I had known sooner I would have gone with CND from the start. Instead I wasted a lot of money (more than the CND foundation course costs) on courses that were less than adequate. If you do decide to go with CND I promise you wont regret it

Hi

I was having the same dilemma as you not too long along. I have looked at all sorts of different courses and had different advice from everyone lol! Im currently studying for my level 3 beauty and wanted to do a nail tech course along side it. I would maybe ask your local college if they do a certificate for nail technology course as I know mine does. It may be worth looking into that route and just start with the basics firsts before looking into brands like CND, NSI etc.

Hope you get onto the right course for yourself and good luck! :)

Vicky

Have a look at the Nubar site a couple of my friends have just done their training with them and I have to say what they've learnt I'm very impressed with and I'm trained with CND. Whatever course you chose I'm sure will be the right one for you. Good Luck

Hi,

Thanks for all of the responses guys....

Does anyone know of the official websites for CND and Nubar?

I've contacted 2 local colleges, but none of them start their nail treatment/nail technology courses now until next September :(

I've also found another course that looks quite good:
Nail Courses - Train to be a nail technician

(The Full Service Nail Technician course).

Has anyone heard of this company before, and does this course look suitable for a beginner? I think I've read on their website that they use millenium products - has anyone had any experience of using these products before???

Thanks

At the risk of sounding harsh, I don't know what else you are expecting on this thread. You have been given sound advice and pointed in the direction of a well-recognised course that has a good reputation and uses fabulous products but you still seem to want more......

Do yourself a favour, get good solid foundation training and take it from there. If you do one of these more intensive courses you will not be working as a Nail Tech any time soon. Do the CND Foundation Course and start as you mean to go on.

Yvette, Like almost everyone else, I came here looking for advice and support. I have spent hours looking at various courses, and simply posted a link to a course that I had found, asking if anyone else had done it.

The reason that I'm looking for alternative courses is because my local colleges aren't starting their next courses until September 2010. I would much prefer to go to college a couple of nights each week, but am not prepared to wait nearly a year in order to do so.

I like the look of the CND course, but i would be unable to get potentially 3 different people to come with me to act as models, as i would be taking time off from work anyway. I'm also confused by what they mean when they say that I would need a Nail Trainer which is available to hire for a refundable price of £125 +VAT.

Does anyone who's done the course know that they mean by 'Nail Trainer?'

Thanks

Hi Laura

To answer your question on "Nail Trainer", All of the CND Academys have a supply of essential nail trainers available for the loan to students whilst on their courses, if you speak directly to a cnd educator they will explain the procedure to you, but basically these are clamp on practice hands that you can practice on till your hearts content whatever time of the day or night you wish. They are a great help when you are training and possibly can not get your hands on real live models. Good luck with your chosen training.

I do understand, honest! And believe it or not I am being supportive - if I can help to stop 1 person from wasting their money on sub-standard training then I'll be happy...... There are always people on here who will be a model for you if getting a model is a sticking point. Tbh, you'd need a model whichever course you did!

As Julia said, the Nail Trainer is a plastic training hand and an invaluable piece of kit. Have a look on Ebay as people often sell them on and you can save a bit of money that way.

I'm so glad you're taking the time to make sure you do the right training for you...... If I can help any further please just ask
