Hi everyone I was wondering if its ok to work in more than one salon . I currently work in a salon and there is another nail tech who has been working there longer than me so she has more clients ,so at present I do not have much work to do there. I have been asked if I would like to work in this other salon when I am free but I dont know if this not a good idear as salon tend to be compeating each other?

A good salon will work well and be the same as another good salon....

Th only problem you might have is each salon will might have different brands,ie...nsi ...creative....and as you know these products are different....mix ratio is different ........

As long as the 2 salons have not been at war with each other i think it would be ok ... but ....your present salon might get snotty about you working with the competition....the decision is yours xxxxxxx

Although there's nothing 'wrong' with it, I can't see your current salon being happy if you go over to the competition. However much they trust you, they don't know for sure that you won't be taking their clients to the new salon. I know I wouldn't feel comfortable if I employed someone and they went to another salon nearby. Especially as I had an ex-employee steal client information and set up in the same row of shops. Maybe I'm just more suspicious these days!

Check in your contract too, as some contracts will state that any outside work, eg. mobile/other salon cannot be carried out within a certian radius during your employment.

Put yourself in your employers shoes
would you be happy for a member of staff to go and work for the competition part time and your self part time
i know i wouldn't like it if i was your boss,
if you were to go to the next town and get a part time job or take on some clients of your own at home or mobile would be much more preferable hth

cheers people didn't know what to do for the best as Im not gettting any new clients in ,and the ones I was doing was because the other girl was on maternity and she is back now so I am not doing any nails and my timing is going up and not making any money. xxxxxx

Just personally for me, if you were working in my salon....are you self-employed or employed?

If employed, I would not be happy if you were working at 2 salons as an employee....I would be doing my best to get you as busy as the other tech in my salon as potentially you could be taking 'my' business the the 'other' salon.

Put some flyers out hun and get some private clients of your own,
good luck with it

im self-employed so no work no money . The salon are not advertising me in anyway is it up to them or me to get clients? At the moment I feel like they only got me in to cover the other girls maternity as there is just not enought work to go round :(

Maybe its time you went full time somewhere else? If you were covering for maternity leave and the other tech is back, it might be time to find something full time in another salon.

Otherwise, is there something you can offer that the other tech can't?

I love to do nail art and i am always doing different things with my nails but the manager said there was not alot of call for it so I havent done anything with it. people have commented on my nails but no-one ask to have it done and I dont know how else to get people to have something different. xx

It depends on your agreement with the salon....some are just happy to take your money, if on a weekly rate, me, I advertise my self-employed ladies along with my general salon advertising...but doing some self-promotion wouldn't harm. And if you are on a % sure it's in the interest of the salon to get business in for you? They will make some money also?

When I was self-employed in a hair salon I had Yellow Pages advertising which I paid for myself and also promoted myself within the salon I was working in.

I'm sure the salon wouldn't object to you promoting yourself. A poster on the wall or in the window advertising a special offer on nail art or something is bound to attract attention. I find that nail art starts to take off in the run up to summer. Maybe offer toenail art too, some clients will be more daring with their toes than their fingers! Plus you are coming up to holiday time so perfect time to start promoting pedicures.

Why don't you speak to the owner, explain that you are struggling for clients now that you would like the chance to promote a new service that the other tech doesn't offer. That way you increase the number of clients plus you are not gonna tread on the other tech's toes.
