Now remember this was 1988 and my first ever television appearance, along with the wonderful Jan Bragulla (now Arnold).

OMG, they put so much makeup on me and I was so nervous, the woman tries to grill me about fingernails (and Jan came to my rescue).

There is a section of the video missing (I foolishly recorded Raiders of the lost Ark over that bit) before realising what I was doing.

I'm sure you will find this video interesting ...... if not to show how things have changed in the last 20 odd years (not to mention fashion and hairstyles), the effort that went into competing, giving thanks to the sponsors, organisers and nailtechs of the past paving the way for the nail technicians of today.

Competitions these days are so sterile and lacking character, ..... as a true pioneer, I'd like to share some stuff when we were actually having some fun while doing our thing. Hell, some of you weren't even born when this was filmed.

I'm gonna have to call some of the old girls to see if they have a better copy.

It's quite a large file (sorry), but I don't want to put it on Youtube.

My haven't we come a long way in the last 25 years??

Those were the days when there was virtually no awareness at all (were't they prissy those presenters??) and obviously allot of resistance to the whole concept of FALSE nails. They just did NOT understand it.

What about doing all nail art with polish too? God, how did we ever wait for it to dry?

The techs these days have it EASY by comparison.

Carl, you were so ahead of your time. I've always known about this interview but never had seen it. Thanks for sharing. I'm sure the younger members of our industry will find it very enlightening. Maybe realise how easy they have it these days compared to the 'old timers'.

While I was converting this video, I was thinking of you Geeg, I have mentioned this interview in the past and now have the technology to bring alot of these great videos into the light of day again, glad you enjoyed it.:)

That was fab and gorgeous Jan hasnt changed a bit!

Loved watching that look at you with dark hair and fab styles too :)

THIS is fabulous. Thank you for sharing it Carl. I remember those days well.....as much as I'd like to forget the shoulder pads, the teased and lacquered hair and well pink and gray together.

Things have definitely changed, and for the better. I was trying to explain it to another tech here in NZ this arvo how things have changed and how easy the newbies have it, but also, it shows up the *difference* in what we had to know back then before getting certified and the way it is done now. (At least here in NZ).

Thanx again, good times good times. (love the mullet ;-0)

wowzers!

That was cool.

And OMG were we ever in need of Fashion change, back in the 80's EEEKS lol Some of it was fun, but a lot of it should have remained at the back of the closets LOL
(MIND YOU... I know see some teens wandering around like we did, lil Madonna's and Cyndi Laupers, here in Montreal... EEEEKS:eek:)

that was areally good video. I bet the presenter at the end who says 'they're are gross', actually has them done now!

Probably!! lol

Weren't the presenters snotty about the competition nails and the stupid things they were saying when what Carl had done was pure fantasy and nothing to do with salon nails .. it was like they were deliberately being thick so they could score points. I could so tell what Jan was thinking :green: and she could out smart anyone at all .... I know her so well!!!

absolutley stuck up. i would have just said 'it's like the fashion world where they create outfits like trees or birdcages on their heads! these also would not be seen on the high street!
