Hi Skin Geeks,

Please can you advise me on which type of massage I should be booking to help with my current issue?

My posture is rubbish anyway and due to sitting awkwardly with a nail client recently and being tense, I have managed to give myself muscle pain that goes from my neck, over my shoulder and also on my lower back all on one side.

I normally hold tension in my neck and shoulders anyway, but due to the effect of that situation I really need to sort my muscles out pronto. I know nothing about the types of massage apart from knowing I need more than a nice relaxing one!

TIA

Id say it's probably worth going for a good Swedish body massage and then if it's still really painful maybe going to see the osteopath for 6 or so sessions.

Other massages you could try could be deep tissue or something warming like lava shells or hot stone massage but there are all sorts out there! Just make sure you find someone that wants to help and comes recommended :)

You also need to choose your massage therapist carefully. I had neck/shoulder pain a while ago, booked myself in for a Swedish massage and it was a total waste of money  She didn't spend extra time on the areas I asked her to, her pressure was rubbish and I was not only disappointed but still in pain afterwards.

Try and find someone based on recommendation and as Jules says either hot stone or deep tissue.

Thanks, hopefully I can find someone through a recommendation. I have had a hot stone massage once and I didn't like it as the stones burnt my back! It took three attempts before they had lost some of their heat before I could stand it, so although I'm sure it's rare, it has put me off that type of treatment.

Deep tissue sounds good, if it does what it says on the tin. In my non experienced view I like to feel like my muscles are getting a good pummeling!

As a beauty therapist myself I shouldn't really say this I guess, but the best massages I've had are from holistic therapists as opposed to beauty therapists. So maybe look for someone who specialises in holistics and works from home perhaps.

Stones should never burn you as there constantly moving , very good to get the heat right down in your muscles.
I would also say either hot stones (done correctly) or deep tissue x

The number of new clients who come to me and say they've been burnt by stones! When they get to know me they try them again and realise they don't burn and how great the heat is for knots and tension.

Definitely find someone who's been recommended

It was so painful when they were first placed on my back that I jumped. On the second attempt after a few minutes it felt like they left a burn trail up my back, so again, couldn't continue.

I've been doing a little bit of research of my area and have so far found one person who sounds like she knows what she is talking about. So hopeful that I can sort myself :)

I've had this so many times and it's so frustrating!!! Therapists lifting their hands off the body, awful pressure and I had one in turkey where I'm certain she wasn't training and performed these strange sort of movements that were a bit like hitting, as in actual hitting, and not hacking... Hilarious!
