Hi Geeks,

I'm a bit of a newbie so forgive me if I'm asking something that has already been covered (I did a search but couldn't see anything of relevance)

I studied my Beauty Therapy Level 1 at an evening class at my local college and was promised that the Level 2 would run the following year. It turned out that there weren't enough students for the class to run so I am now qualified up to level 1 and have my Manicure & Pedicure diploma.

I can either do the whole 2 years again at a different college or do the units I have not yet covered (waxing, make-up & lash & brow) seperately at specialist training centres. Your opinions would be much appreciated!

In the meantime I am interested in Preston Therapy Centre's VTCT course in Swedish Body Massage. Have any geeks out there trained at Preston Therapy Centre?

Fankoo guys n girls!!!!!!!!!

Surely you can just apply straight onto Level 2 at any college? After all, many people go straight onto Level 2 anyways. Have you checked out all the colleges?

All the colleges local to me do the Level 2 over a period of 2 years, whereas the college I trained at originally promised the level 1 in year one and the level 2 in year 2.

Are there no other colleges in your area which offer Level 2? I went straight in to do level 2 without level 1 first, I also do a 2 hour round trip twice a week in order to do it!

i also went straight to level 2 and then level 3 the following year. As far as i know, all the colleges in my area definatly do level 2 and 3, have a ring round, i think you would be better off doing the full NVQ instead of doing all the units seperatly. It seems really unusual that they wouldn't run level 2.

Any college will accept you at level 2 without level 1,providing you have gained certain qualifications at school.I didn't do level 1 but went straight in did level 2 alongside level 3 massage, then went back following year and did level 3 and other qualifications.

I know you have to start at level 1 if you dont get certain qualifications at school, however you have done level 1 now, so if needed, when you go to enrole for your level 2 at whatever college, they can cross reference your level 1 and there should be no question of you having to do your level 1 again.

Just take your assessment books and certificate to whatever college you wish to go and away you go.HTH:)

I'm sorry I don't think I have explained myself very well. When I applied at college I originally submitted my application for NVQ Level 2 Beauty Therapy. I was told by the college that the NVQ would be held slightly different than usual- we would do half the units in the first year which would enable us to gain the Level 1 Certificate, (which I have since passed and been awarded) and the second year we would complete the remaining units and be awarded the Level 2 Certificate. So if I do now enrol at one of my other local colleges I will have to cover the whole two years again.

Starting from scratch at another college is probably the option that I will take, I guess I'm just a little down about effectively wasting a whole year!

But if I'm reaffirming my current skills, that can only be a good thing right?

Ahhh I see what you mean now.:)
It seems really unfair of the college to do this. Had you originally enrolled on a 2 or 1 year course? If it were 2 then I should think that they have to honor that comittment regardless of their numbers. If not then your only option does seem to be to repeat the whole lot atanother college. This does sound like it might be the better bet for you.

I think it was pretty low of the college to do this- the marketing department said it'd be the 2 year level 2, but when it came to enrolment the tutors said it would be the 1 year level 1 INITIALLY and the level 2 would be awarded at the end of the second year. IMO they led us to believe that we were signing up for the full 2 years!

Anyway time to move on... I'll just have to book on the VTCT Massage Course at Preston in April to cheer myself up and continue on my quest!

Still not convinced that you will be re-doing work Debs - what unit numbers have you completed?

Apologies if I still misunderstand, but if you have done some of the units that are required for level 2 and completed them they can be cross-referenced to your new portfolio and dont need to be re-assessed.

Are you looking at part time courses or full time?

So far I've done the Manicure, Facials & Health & Safety modules. I also completed my Manicure & Pedicure diploma seperately.

I've decided which college I'm going to transfer to so hopefully they'll take into account the work that I've already completed. The course starts in September. Lets hope this one goes smoothly!

They will APL you for the units you have already completed which means you wont have to do those units again and as for Preston college then think again because it is very badly run and you will find it hard to sustain your enthusiasm.
