Heloooo! :)

I was just wondering.......

My nails haven't had enhancements on for a while as when I had them taken off last time ( about 3 weeks ago) my middle nail on my right (dominant) hand was REALLY weak and stupid! I decided to see if it would get stronger like the rest have and haven't treated it any differently to the rest of them. I would love to have enhancements on again but this particular nail is now broken right down past the free edge on zone 1 and is still really soft and I keep catching it which breaks it even more, it's jagged looking even after I gently filed it to try to get it to look a bit better. It doesn't hurt, just looks really awful!

My tech only does tips, would it be ok to have a tip applied, or do you think it's best to leave alone forever until it decides to buck it's ideas up and behave like the rest of my nails :). Could an over lay be applied to strengthen it up or do you think that would just add insult to injury?

Any advice would be appreciated as I can't see my tech til at least tuesday.

xx

Hello..I also have a couple of nails that have been behaving like this..I have tipped them and they have been fine but I also have been using lashings of solar oil..hth..x

:cry:Thnaks Suzie :)

I have been using solar oil until I've not much left in my bottle! It usually lasts me quite a while but I've been oiling morning, noon, night and the hours in between too, lol!

I'll see if I can see my tech on Tuesday, it's just really annoying me now!

Also, would solar oil be any good on a burn (just joking!)? I just got spat at badly with fried eggs oil . I know solar's good, but that good?! I've run my hand under cold water for about 8 minutes but it really stings.

Thanks for your advice again Suzie. xx

No nail is going to regain strength until it grows out completely. Solar Oil will help keep it flexible and moisturised as it grows but will not strengthen a damaged nail.

Try a thin tip and overlay and do not remove for 3-4 months.

Have you tried calcuim clear nail polish this should help to strengthen the nail, I used it when I had my babies and was feeding them myself (which weakened my nails) and it worked really well. :)

Calcium .. now there is an interesting thing. It ranks alongside the other silly myths like gelly cubes being good for your nails

Did you know that there is only a trace of calcium found in the nail plate?? And that using a polish that contains it would have no benefit whatsoever?

Did you know that the nail plate cannot be fed with calcium by using a polish?

Did you now that it is the formaldehyde in the polish that dehydrates the nail plate and thus makes you think it has gone harder when in actuality it has only become more brittle?

Did you know that any professional person would always recommend a professional product that actually will DO something rather than something you can buy off the high street that doesn't?

On overlay of any kind (even polish) and a bit of care and a good healthy diet is what will nurture your nail back to health and it will take time. There is no quick fix, and that is the truth.

Ok bit confused if any overlay even polish will help the condition then how come the product containg formaldehyde will make it more brittal what polish should be used as an overlay normal base polish then top? Have a nail like this but only one have left it alone and its growing back but was wondering what clear polish as an overlay would be best for it thank you dont want to put some thing onto make it worse.xx

Thanks for all the relpies girls, and Geeg, that stuff is really interesting and useful to know. :)

I'll ask her to put a bit of l&p over it as it really does need something. I keep catching it and assume (I know, never assume!) that it's damaging the nail and the bed more becuase it does hurt when I cathc it but not at other times. Thing is, I have my Creative Nail Foundation course at the end of August, so it would have to come off for that, but hopefully it'll have got a little better by then. xx

Firstly I would not remove the enhancement for your class. Leave that one on and just use the other 9. It will be fine. No one, especially another student, should be working on a nail plate as damaged as this sounds.

The nail plate will not be getting better under the enhancement. It will just be protected by it UNTIL it gorws out!

Formadehyde dehydrates the plate (takes all the moisture out of it) so it does become harder but when something bcomes less flexible it is more brittle and more likely to break.

All I am saying is that a polish .. any clear polish .. will add some protection to the surface of the plate while it is growing out .. nothing will make it physically stronger until the new nail has grown through.
