Can anyone point me to a good information source where I can learn more about MMA and other chemicals in nail products please.

I have been reading about MMA being banned from use in it's liquid form but would I be right in thinking that acrylic powders can legally contain MMA (read that it is a 70:30 mix with EMA)

Any info anyone can share would be greatly appreciated

There is allot about MMA if you Google it ... tonnes and tonnes of info.

MMA is only of concern to we as nail technicians if it is in the monomer liquid used to create nail enhancements.

Known branded lines do not contain MMA Monomer. Stick to branded lines and you won't need to worry.

Thanks Geeg :D I have downloaded a lot of info but it is all exceptionally technical - no laymans terms anywhere hehe

So in powder form, is MMA okay as it is at a lower ratio to the EMA?

I am reading the stuff on here about it too and slowly ploughing through google!

Yes, Geeg is right, MMA is only a problem in monomer form. The powder in L&P often contains PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) which consists of long chains of polymerised MMA - and that is entirely safe and kosher. As long as the *monomer* does not contain MMA! Most professional monomer contains EMA (ethyl methacrylate) which is perfectly safe if the relevant health and safety procedures are followed.

Thanks again Geeg - and thanks Ruth :D I recall that you have a Masters in chemistry - science is not really my strong point lol

I am hopnig to go to college and have been advised that I may have to purchase a college kit for the nail course which concerns me as I would like to provide my own kit - a conscious choice of knowing what it in the chemicals I am using ya know.

Am I able to purchase CND products if I am not a qualified tech? If not, is there another brand that I could use that will enable me to stay free of the nastier spectrum of chemicals?

As you know, I am totally new to this but find it fascinating and would love to learn more about the intricate side that most salons don't discuss. We have 2 local salons - one uses hand files and they dont' really discuss the nails much with you, the other uses drills, face masks and dental acrylic (which only a select few customers are told!) - that is MMA isn't it?

Your college kit will not contain MMA monomer so don't worry. I'm afraid you would not be able to purchase professional products from CND prior to a class unless they were using them on your course.

Finally, just because the discount salons use face masks and drills does not automatically mean they are using MMA. And really unless you know and can prove from where the salon is buying their products, you cannot say with certainty they are using dental acrylic either (though they may be).

I would not ever say this to anyone "officially" Geeg unless I had proof hun :D I have been told by the lady in there and she has also told a couple of her regular customers but, to be honest, it isn't really any of my business as I only go to her for airbrushing on the odd occasion.

I shall query with the college which system they use and go from there - thanks again for the info hun x
