Hi

I haven't done very much colour work, but I recently did the custom blending course, and so I'm starting to experiment and have a bit of a play with the various colours.

I know that colours and glitters in zone 1 with a custom blend in zones 2 & 3 are quite popular so I've had a bit of a go, but I'm coming across a couple of problems. I think I might have thought of a solution but I want to see what you all think of this before I have another go:

I want to make sure that my zone 1 is thin enough so that I can cap it in clear without producing a bulky free edge. Also, I want to make sure that I dont drag the custom blend over the zone 1, similarly I dont want to leave a ridge where zone 2 hasnt been brought up flush with zone 1 (hope you're still with me so far!)

So, what I thought was, to combat all these problems, I would:

1) Apply zone 1 thinly.
2) Apply zone 2, bring it up to zone 1 but leave a bit of a ridge rather than pull it over the tip
3) Cap the whole nail in clear.

What do you think? Does anyone have any advice?

what about trying a reverse technique hun ? that might help ease fears about getting the CB in zone 1 ?
let us see some pics when you play x

I've got some that I did on myself, they are not very good I'm afraid, but since its my first attempt I suppose they are ok to begin with. I will try and get a pic and post it on later.

Hi hun,
I would also try the reverse method for now,
Infact I use the reverse method most of the time when doing a custom colour set now, I just prefer it, and its working ok for me so far....
This is the way I do mine....
Prep as usual.
Apply either form or tip...
Place zone 2..shape reverse smile, place zone 3's..
I do all nail beds on one hand, and then go back to the first nail, and place the free edge's,
Just butting them up to the already placed smile, then I cap the whole lot in clear...
I used this method for my latest set on myself..(first I have done on myself for a few months)
I am even quite happy with my "wrong" hand lol...

(please ignore the eyeliner demonstration on my hand lol)

I have seen it done another way other than reverse...i will try and explain it as best as i can.
prep, apply tip/ form then apply a thin layer of the the custom colour to further than where you want you smile line to be (but not too far so that you will see it from looking at the back of the nail).
Then do your zone 1 overlapping the custom colour and shape your smile line, apply your zone 2 and build your apex with clear then apply zone 3.
i hope that makes some sense....i think it does!!??

Sian, that makes perfect sense to me hun,
I will have a go of that when I get a chance,
I'm wondering if it will leave a shadow at all ??? I suppose I won't know untill I have a go though lol
Sometimes I do find I have gone a little thick with the custom colour, then have problems when it comes to blending zone 3 in to be a little transparent..but this way sounds like it would illiminate that problem..

Grrr wish I didn't have nails on now, so I could go and road test it :green:

hmmm i have seen it done with pink and white this way but thinkin about what you said ems it probably wouldnt work if you were using a transparant glitter/ coloured tip the reverse would be better. If you were using a dense glitter or an opaque powder then i think it would.
by the way ems LOVE the nails u got at the moment!
