Hi all :)

I'm thinking about making a new website for myself,

Iv had one before but this time around i want to choose my own domain ending with either a .com or .co.uk which isnt something i had last time.

I was going to go with co.uk as i am in the u.k and not going anywhere else to provide my services.....nobody any where else in the world would be interested in my website, and from my personal preference, when i look at sites, if i see co.uk i know its an english site, where as you have to actual go into a .com site to see if it is going to be relevant for you.

I just would like your opinions as to which you feel is better to use and why?

:)

Hi
I used to own a balloon website, and I bought the .co.uk AND the .com, just really so that no-one else with the same name could get the .com and it be confusing if that makes sense...
It's also a good idea so that if someone knows the business name but not the full web address, it wont matter if they put .co.uk/.com on the end, they will get to your site.

If i could only have had the 1, I would have just gone with .co.uk
That's just my opinion, and it was balloons not beauty!!

Ditto above definitely take both.

You might find you are quite limited in what is actually available. You can search for web addresses that are available on something (not sure of the exact name) Internic and some other web registering places. Ruth will probably pick up on this later and set you right. xxx

thanks for your replys guys,

chosing both the co.uk and .com is a great idea.....will probably do that when im ready to set it up

thanks marioned for ur reply, iv already searched for my domain names and know that my choice is available in all endings, i have no probs with the setting up of a website done by myself, like i say iv done it before, it was purely just to see the concensus of which ending people would go for, thanks anyway :)

.com will cost you more.... if you in the uk i think it would be good to go for co.uk, but at the end of the day i dont really think it makes a difference its your name that counts

I use 123-reg, Domain name registration from 123-reg to register my domain names; and yes, the .com domains are a lot more expensive than .co.uk

A .com will cost £10.56 per year (including VAT), whereas a .co.uk will cost £6.56 for 2 years, which is only £3.28 per year, so only 31% of the cost of the .com

However that is just the cost of the domain itself and does not include hosting etc...

Normally I recommend a .co.uk domain if the target audience is limited to people in the UK, e.g. a UK-based salon.

Knew you'd be along Ruth xx

thanks guys :)

its great to read ur replys as ur backing up everything i know,

i to have used 123-reg to build my aunties website, so i understand hosting and domain names etc, i just wondered if poeple think the same as me on the fact that my business is only relevant to the uk so that suggests a co.uk name, but as weezie and minnie suggested, having both is a good idea to stop any confusion if other sites set up similar to me. and the out lay for both really isnt that much for a few years,

thanks so much for ur comments :D

Buy both. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't cost that much really. xxx

I bought both .com and .co.uk when I had my previous business website and set up the .co.uk as the main site with the .com address forwarding to the .co.uk so people could always find me and no-one else could take the address and confuse everyone.

Cheers,
Hazel
