Hi there,

Have posted this on biz geek as well but thought I'd get more response on here.

I've had a friend doing my database for me on access with my laptop (other one than this).

Things have gone pear shaped between us recently & after getting my laptop back today, I've tried to access the client details but to no avail:eek:.

I've texted her to see how to access them them & this is the text I got back "I told you there were problems with it didn't I.[yes she did, a couple of months ago]. Had to contact microsoft and they said it was the software not being installed correctly and the file was corrupted. I downloaded a fix but obviously doesn't fix it for long sorry"

I'm getting in a bit (well quite a lot actually) of a panic now as I've paid her quite a bit in the past 3-4 months to do this for me (as well as other admin jobs). Am I being suspicious in thinking she may have deleted all the files or could she be correct in there being a computer problem?

I'd really appreciate some answers asap as she had her last pay check today & if she probably did delete the files (which would take HOURS to re-do) then I could perhaps cancel this last check.

Prompt advice much appreciated.

Where did you get your computer from? I think PC world is able to recover files if accidentally deleted. We have a £7.00 a month 'insurance' with them that covers things like this. I don't know if they'd do it for you if you don't have the policy but it might be worth going down there. I've called before but it's an 08 number so was no help. I'd go straight to the store(with the laptop). x

PC world will accept your pc even if you've not got the insurance - you just get charged for what ever work they do - they charge by the hour and well worth every penny.

I had a pc that was really old and well past its sell by date it crashed and never recovered (in my hands) a day with them and they had sorted it they even managed to recover some files, it cost me about £70 but well worth it the files were very important ones.

If I was you I'd cancel the cheque and not bother paying her if she's gonna be a stroppy cow - but that's my opinion hehe

Thanks for the replies so far.

Thing is, I'm not sure the files were even 'accidently' deleted. My 'friend' is in a strop with me about something minor that's blown out of context, hence i'm doubting the bit about whether there's a corrupt file or not.

There's a computer buff near us so will contact him to try & recover the data - if it was even done in the 1st place.

I've cancelled the cheque in the meantime so will await the fireworks when it doesn't clear in her account.

Sorry .... when you say you think the files are deleted ?? When you go into access, are the customer records there or is there a warning message saying corrupt data ??? If they're not there, she's just deleted them and if it says corrupt, it needs looking at. I've used access quite a bit and there should be a folder somewhere in your "my computer" documents which is actually the file containing the client records that access uses. Explain bit more and I might be able to help you xxx

Thanks Sam but after the computer tech had a thoroughly good look through the laptop, it turns out that my 'friend' didn't even do the work. So, basically I've paid her a LOT of money over the past 3-4 months for work that she's not done.

I'm waiting to speak to a lawyer about it as to how to proceed to try & recover my money.

blimey Sarah, that is terrible!

Blimey !! and he will know, cos they can read into all the techy code type stuff cant they (very technical !!) and see what the history of the hard drive etc. Really sorry about that. You did say you fell out over something minor, seems like a bit of an excuse for her to fall out with you because she hadnt done what she was meant to ie. guilt ! (well rid of that one imo). Sorry I wasnt able to help xxxx

This is just awful hun , I hope you get your money back somehow, Its awful to think someone you class as a friend could do this to you. x
