I am really looking forward to a time when the beauty industry has more regulations. I have found out a number of things since being injured during a treatment. Unfortunately some of these points refer to all businesses not just a salon which I never knew about.

In order for a salon (or any other business) to need report a RIDDOR (The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences) the injured person must have gone straight to the hospital (not the doctor).

Any business does not have a legal requirement to give a receipt (even a high street store. Before the service in the salon you must ask before the treatment that you need one!

The general public cannot speak directly to trading standards or environmental health (I was advised this by someone on the consumer direct phone line.)

Consumer direct is just there to get you a refund.

The only way you can make your complaint of injury heard is if you make a legal claim against the salon.

Luckily however BABTAC do want to know about bad practice.

So it seems that as therapists we can be as rude and uncaring as we like and perform services in as sloppy a manner as we like, injuring clients left right and center without any worry as long as no one decides to go through the hassle of suing us!

If this is in the wrong forum please move it for me.

Any comments welcome.

I don't know what to say

I would be very interested to hear about your ordeal by pm.

I can also recommend a solicitor who helped me when my dentist pulled out the wrong two teeth

I have sent you a basic summary, thanks for the concern.

That's awful :(

Well hopefully they are insured. I'd be inclined to throw the book at them, especially given how rude they were to you!

What went wrong with the facial incidentally? I know I've had facials in the past where they have that steam thingy, and even did things like comedone extraction with some sort of implement, so am guessing that either of those could potentially go wrong, e.g. getting burned by the steam thingy, or someone being a bit over-enthusiastic at extracting a comedone!

Hey Ruth, I will pm you as this is a public forum and I don't want to make the claim invalid!

They are insured and I use the same insurer BABTAC

As they advertise that they do botox and fillers and are offering 50% off IPL at the moment I have reported them to the Health Care Commission via email as I only just realised they existed and the salon should really be registered with them, which they are not.

Not sure if consumer rights have given you correct info there! Only say this because when i spoke to my environmental health officer during a routine visit I mentioned some extreme damage that had been caused to a client's nails by a NSS salon. His reply was to tell all clients that had had their nails damaged to contact him at the town hall as without any reports they are helpless to do anything.

Did you try to call local authority and just ask to be put thro to env hlth? It seems a bit wierd to me - if you had a serious hygiene compaint about a food retailer you would surely need to contact this dept to report them?

Unless, of course, my local auth works differently to others?

Yes I told the man on the help line that I called the environmental health number and it went through to him and he said that's because you are no longer able to talk to them direct as a member of the public! Very odd! Maybe it's just where I live they don't have the resources or something! The CAB are also no longer running a phone line where I am and it says they have no funds to do it on the answerphone message, you need to visit them and the nearest one to me is a hassle to get to! He said my complaint would be registered but that they are more to help get refunds, which I already have.

Just a stab in the dark weezie but you don't seem to be getting much joy,
how about contacting watchdog, they are all about consumer affairs, hth

What treatment did you have a what went wrong?

Sounds like you must be feeling like you are banging your head on a brick wall!!

Hope you manage to get everything sorted.
