Be careful with investing in this at this stage as its currently being investigated through Health and safety. While the fish are changed and the water is filtered there is the common concern that if someone has an infection it can be passed on through the fish.

Its currently banned in around 14 states in the US so now the UK is being investigated

This has been on BBC News today, environmental health officers have asked the HPA to investigate as they have concerns that it is the fish that may pass things on between clients. Obviously with this kind of coverage it may well have a detrimental effect on many businesses that only offer this treatment.

Concerns have been raised in the Daily Mail yesterday (28 Feb) too about the hygiene side.

I had a go at this the other week and I have to say, I didnt really enjoy it. The thought of 100 fish nibbling away on my feet, the thought of someone else's feet that have been in the taken and then the fish poo! I wont be doing it again and I honestly think it may be a fad, I may be wrong, I don't know....

What will be next? A hair salon where trained chimps do your hair, it's all a bit bizarre for me.
Now there's an idea! Lol

I tried this for the first time last week at Lakeside shopping center. They have a new shop opened up called "Appy Feet", I filled out a form, they then asked if I had any open cuts, wounds or veruccas, I said no, which I havent, but they didnt check my feet, so people can/will lie & go ahead to have it done (which is my bigges fear) I got given a pair of crocs, went over & washed my feet, then put my feet into the tank of fish, it really tickled at first & I though I wouldnt be able to bear it but after a minute or so I got used to it. To be honest my feet was no differnt after, softer yes because I had soaked them in water for 15 mins, but I have quite a bit of hard skin & didnt look or feel like it was any different. I found the fish went up my legs, around my toes, but not where I wanted (on the soles of the feet)!

On the whole, I think it is nice to try as a gimick, a one off, but certainly would not be a treatment I would have once a week/month.
I do think it is a fade, & cant see it being around for too long. Reading what I have read I wouldnt be surprise if it gets banned here too! x

Did you get insurance? Who will insure the treatment? Nobody seems to know
I have the tank in my salon and am getting the fish today.
It is totally hygenic! You wouldn't be allowed to do it if it wasn't!
The clients feet are washed before the treatment and the tank has a Uv sterilser and a 4 level filtration system which keeps the water clean and kills harmful bacteria constantly.
You replace a couple of buckets of water twice daily and use a special hoover to clean any waste.
Not sure I understand why people would be worried about putting their feet in after someone else as I'm sure most of you go swimming in the sea which is filthy?!
I'll let you know how popular it is and any other info I get today when the guy comes with the fish!
Oh also it has been banned in the States as they were doing it the Asian way where you have multiple people with their feet in one tank, not very hygenic.

Do you know anyone who will insure the treatment?..it's a nightmare I've asked everywhere

I would give BABTAC a try for insurance as they had an article on it a while back, so you may be lucky there.
However the HPA are looking in the hygiene factors relating these fish so check with them first. You may be wasting your money?

As a tropical fish keeper for many years (hiliarous that my first topic I will post in is somewhat related to fish -- which are my obsesison) I would never put my feet in fish water.

Fish carry all sorts of diseases and usually you don't know it until it's too late. When I do tank work, I glove up to my underarms. Fish CAN and DO carry diseases that can be spread to humans.

Fish TB anyone? Fish Tuberculosis

mrs jones shouldnt really be in the water with an infection on her foot though ..so if done properly with full consultation as you would with any other treatment i dont see this would be a problem.

ummmmmmmmmmm interesting thought Tigi didn't think of that but feel extremely sick:eek:

I have a fish spa and only that in the shop, I am a fully qualified level3 beauty and spa therapist and I have also had a 6ft tropical fish tank in my home for 10 yrs.

I fill out a consultation form, I then check the clients feet, even inbetween toes and then I wash them and then rinse them. The people that come in know what they are doing, the people that are dubious dont come in. I dont allow any one in the tanks that have cuts, verrucas, abrasions, any skin conditions that are fungal or bacterial and also ask whether they are pregnant or have cancer due to it being quite stimulating, I had a lady who was in remission who I had to turn away she went to her cancer doctor and he said she wasnt allowed to have it done.

The filter I have completely filters each tank every 4 minutes, I feed the fish in the morning and take out any excess food, I test the water every morning and at the end of each day before and after I do the partial water change, which is tap water that has been left overnight to dechlorinate and adjusted to the room temperature.

These fish are bred to do exactly what they are and if people read actual statements from the UK from the H&S executives the only worry they have is the people that are complaining about them. There are no known cases of cross infection in any salon in the uk.

I admit some people will do it as an add on and not have a clue and they will be the ones that are closed down, so if you dont know about fish or the care and are not aware of how much they actually take to keep then my advice is leave it alone for people that do.

I charge £7 for 15 minutes and they can have a file and paint after so other salons that are against it and think it is a money making scheme then why do you charge £15 to £30 + for a pedicure? Quick buck there comes to mind!!!!

I think it is here to stay and if monitored then there is next to zero chance of anyone catching anything. Everyone uses public toilets in bars, restaurants, swimming pools etc.....and have just as much chance of catching things from there through people not washing hands, weeing on seats etc so give the fish spa people a break as it is our livelihoods at stake and some of us do actually care lots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Winchester Hawkins are specialists and go through aviva as their broker, also abt insurance, you have to make sure you have tank, public liability and treatment risk when sorting it out.

Also lockyers are specialists just google either companys, mine is 27 over 10 months!

Hope this helps

I have taken note of your number and will be giving you a call either tomorrow or monday.

From all the research i have done so far i have discovered there is no possible way of getting the tanks and fish for less then a few £1,000.

We was looking into setting up the tanks etc ourself but i have never done that well keeping goldfish never mind garra rufa.

If you can give me anymore information, most importantly figures please can you pm me

I got mine from drgarra in Leeds . I'd been looking for a acrylic tank with a sump filter. There's was by far the cheapest with the best spec. Got my fish and tank for 900 each. Glass tanks are cheaper but the seals go moldy and are due to be banned by h&s. I'm making money and my fish don't die apart from the one that got trod on. My shop is in gravesend...pls come!

I own a Garra Rufa spa. I have been informed the acrylic is too be banned as it scratches and can harbour bacteria?

We do full consultations, check feet, wash feet all before going in. I am working on a new idea with my lovely fishes. My fish get spoiled! They are fed a little food twice a day and we rest them before each client aswell.

The fish don't get full they have a high metabolism which means they process the food quickly. They don't eat all of the skin so the right filtration is essential.

It is not simple or easy, it takes work and commitment. Who will feed the fish when your salon is closed? What about Xmas day or holidays?

The filters needs weekly maintenance sometimes more often.

I pride myself in a Spotlessly clean and hygienic environment. The ladies working in the spa are fully trained beauty therapists. We are currently setting up out beauty room aswell.
