What is the rule when waxing - do you have to use a new spatula each time you apply wax to any part of the body?? When I did my training we used the same one for each client then just binned it at the end of treatment, but since I have heard that it is a big no no due to cross contamination. I am just starting out and still practising on friends but wull be going out into the big wide world soon and don't want to be pulled up at the first hurdle. What's the right way??

There is no law to say you can't double dip.
You will get people that are abhorrently against it and people who do double dip.

I don't double dip hot wax as I use it in the area's that are swabbed for MRSA.

I always double dip my metal spatula when strip waxing. However, I would never double dip if there was blood spotting and I would never double dip from one client to another.

I prefer to take advice from doctors on health and safety matters and not therapists as they know far more than us. Every doctor that I have questioned on this (and there have been many), all say that there is no danger at all. xxx

I also double dip, and have done for years, although never between clients & never on intimate areas or where there is blood spotting. I have never encountered a problem with this, and as far as I know there has never been a recorded incident where this has led to cross contamination.

Yep i'm the same.
I never double dip with my non-strip wax and like Kim i do double dip with the strip wax whilst using my metal spatula. I also don't double dip when there is blood spotting.
As Martin said, there has never been a recorded case of someone getting contaminated from a wax pot!
I also don't wear gloves unless doing intimate waxing.
Honestly my hairdresser is more likely to catch something from touching some peoples heads

At college I was told to never double dip. We used 2 spatulas, one spatula would be used to drizzle the wax onto the other, which to be honest I found a complete waste of time and it took fooooorever!! Some colleges teach you to use a new spatula every time.
I double dip since leaving college. Like the others have said, I wouldn't do this on intimate areas or on areas that have blood.
I would say to you, do what ever makes sense to you and what ever you feel comfortable with. I find the roller wax systems work really well and are a fav of mine. Have a look and see what you think xxx

In my province the Cosmetology Association, has in fact said that we are no longer double dipping in any wax. And honestly I wouldnt go anywhere where they do double dip. Not to be mean, or rude just I thinks its pretty gross to have everybodies everything int the wax and spead that. But I don tknow what your laws are.

I'm intrigued to know how 'everybodys everything' gets in to the wax pot!
No wax that has touched my client ever makes it back into the wax pot.
The spatula doesn't go on my clients, only the wax on the spatula.
I'd rather go to someone who double dips than go to some restaurants, sit on certain toilets, shake hands with certain people, handle money ........oh and the list goes on!
You would have to be extremely unhygienic to get a contaminated wax pot!

I dont see how it can be hygenic your have touched someone with a spatula then put it back in the wax, I understand that there is no actually recorded incidents but what about things like mrsa as you can catch this outside hospitals of would the bacteria not survive the heat of the pot??

I use a new spatula each time as that is what i was taught & just incase as i am a worrier & slightly OCD so i like to be mega careful.

Its really hard to know what to do as college teaches u 1 thing then there are extremely experienced waxer on here that do this & have never had any problems.

Great thread as there are so many different opinions!!

Surely ur spatula touches the client at some point the side of the spatula then glide over skin, I use wooden spatulas & there is always excess was on stick so am I doing something wrong ??

this is not my favourite treatment would love to train with kim lawless to get better techniques, saving up at the moment!!!

thanks xxx

You don't touch the client with the spatula. Only the wax from the spatula touches the client. The wax then stays on the client so when you put your spatula back into the wax pot there is nothing to go back into the pot.
Simples :)

I'm agreeing with Angelina as you are putting all of the wax on the skin until the spatular is clear from wax. So there is no remainder wax going back into the pot.
You assess your clients before to make sure they are not contra-indicated and clean the area before hand. So I cannot see the problem with it. I cant see that any germs would live in the heat of a wax pot.
There are so many different ways of doing things in all treatments. I think you have to do what you think is right xxx

Well even if you have wax left on your spatula it still won't have touched your client. If it had of touched your client it would have stayed on their skin!

Definately need more training in this area as it is not my most confident subjects I think my OCD makes me slightly nervous waxing plus the strict no doubling dipping rules at college!!

Thanks next thing im buying is extra wax training!!!

Yes and colleges teach you never to wax above the eyebrows and to wipe eyebrow tint off as soon as it's been applied etc etc... but hey we live in the real world and in the real world we do what is necessary to get the job done properly :)

This is true ha!! never thought aboout it like that b4 good point xx

Kim won't blow her own trumpet, so I'm going to do it for her:green:
Her courses are very hands on, she takes as long as YOU need and makes everything very clear. You will love her course, come away with bags of confidence and it's likely to turn into your favorite service. She's worth every penny and then some:lol:
But back to what was asked, your wooden spatula, dips into the wax, the wax surface that is away from the spatula is what touches the skin, the surface of wax that is touching the spatula never touches the client so no contamination.

Yeah iv read so many great things about her & would love to be more confident in waxing so that i can eventually do intimate waxing thanks xxxxx

Well even if you have wax left on your spatula it still won't have touched your client. If it had of touched your client it would have stayed on their skin!

Now that makes sense........

Im a drizzler.....I use a large wooden spatula but transfer wax with a smaller one........but I do wipe on the hot bar of the heater pot...... but this wax hasnt touched the clients skin as per above.......

Not sure why im drizzling really .......hmmmmm

I'm only new to this area i know. I have only started my course and we are trained a one dip method use one end of the spatula and then cover that end with tissue so u can use it as a handle to use the other end. We have had few workshops and in any area the speaker says you are in college now and you have to preform certain thing for exam purposes BUT they say things are much different in the real world of beauty therapy this must be one of those times where college is much different to the real world.:)
