Hi, my step mum asked me if it is ok for me to put a couple of layers of uv gel over her natural nails to give them some added strength. She used to have lovely nails but recently due to health problems they have been breaking a lot. She just wants to give them a chance to grow. Would this be ok? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do?
Thanks.

Yes - that is fine and is what you call a natural nail overlay (NNO).

What gel system are you trained in?

I haven't qualified yet. I'm doing the EN gel course at the moment. I am using dream gel but am going to order the NSI balance sample kit to try. Would the NSI be ok to use? And is there any kind of uv top coat I could use as well?
Thanks.

When do you qualify with the essential nails?

The concern I have is that harder gel removal can only be done by buffing off and with the essential nail system you only qualify on the nail trainer and not on real people is that right?

I would ring NSI and ask them if they are happy for you to try their gel without yet being qualified and also ask them if they are happy that you can buy their gel with the EN qualification.

It is a totally different ball game doing enhancements on real people compared to the nail trainer. I know you will need to carry out nails at some point on real nails and probably your mum is the best person to train on but just be very cautious when filing over the natural nail. Have you tried any on real nails yet? What was your experience?

Can I suggest filling in more details in your profile about the systems you are using and the training you are doing as it will help others in answering your questions.

NNO are tricky to get the hang of, its not really as simple as just painting the gel onto the nail. this will just peel off. you still have to build the apex and also make sure you cap the free edge.

I have done 4 people's nails so far. My only difficulty at the moment is that I haven't mastered the art of creating the perfect shape with the gel. I still have to file them into shape after curing. I never intended to practice purely on the nail trainer, I want to do as many sets of REAL nails as possible. I have asked everyone I know to ask everyone they know if I can practice on them, so I'm hoping to be able to do more soon. I don't like the dream gel at all it is really gooey and difficult to shape. I have almost run out of gel and really want to try a different one so I will call NSI and ask if I can try theirs.

i ALWAYS buff after gel application, even if its just wih a white block. no matter how perfect my appication is there will still be the odd dip or flaw. so ALWAYS buff into shape afterwards. and then finish with high gloss gel.

Maybe I am just too much of a perfectionist!

Hi hun, just to let you know you can buy NSI trial kits while training with EN, the only thing I am concerned about is do you have any insurance. If you are working on the public even friends and family you do need to be insured. You can get insurance through The Guild as a trainee and then upgrade once you have qualified..x

I looked at the Guild website and doesn't it say somewhere that if you have insurance as a trainee then you can only work if you have a fully qualified nail tech with you?

Not if your EN trained hun, give them a ring they are really helpful, there are others out there as well, but I found these to be the most helpful tbh.

So they will insure me before I have even passed my course?

will pm you hun...x

Pleased to hear it! I will practice, practice, practice until one day I perfect it!!

While practicing, why don't you try a soak off gel instead of the traditional buff off variety? This means that if you don't quite get it right, or have problems with lifting, you can easily soak off in acetone instead of having to risk damage to the natural nail by buffing. Once you are more confident with your filing technique you can then move on to buff off gels (or not if you get to like the soak offs )

Cheers,
Hazel

I read that it was only for requested case studies by your tutor....?

Young Nails Mani q is perfect for overlays for people who want strength to there natural nails.

i'd go for the flexibility of a soak off gel in this situation.

Thanks everyone.
