I have come to the end of my rope now. I always had bad skin as a teen but it just never has come out of it. I have huge pores, its always dry and I am fed up of it looking a state.

I wash using a normal daily face wash and use moisturiser at bed time and in the morning before make-up.

I have used lots of different things over the years so I thought I would ask on hear what any skin geeks would advise me what would be good either treatment or product wise.

I'd highly recommend going for a facial, Dermalogica would be great.
You need to get your skin type and skin conditions determined and a suitable home care regime recommended.
If you are suffering breakouts suggests oily skin but it sounds like you also have dehydration/dry areas so you need to tackle both appropriately.
Investing in a good range of skincare products is so worth it, it really does make such a difference to your skin.

A basic daily routine would be:

Double Cleanse
Tone
Moisturise

I exfoliate with Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant every 3 days and use a mask when I feel like my skin needs a boost. I also use a facial oil a few times a week.

Thank you, Sounds right to me.

I will book a facial soon. How often should I be going for one?

I will have a look round the local salons and see if they do dermalogica.

I think I am a little later worrying about my skin but I think better late than never

Thank you for your advice

Hi there - im not a dermatologist or anything like that - this is merely what I use - I use vaseline - yes vaseline apply like cleanser and take off with a dry or damp large cotton swab, then do again if you wear make up - to take off excess vaseline use witch hazel (large bottles can be purchased at supermarkets boots etc for around £3.00)that acts as a toner, then i use Oilatum Repair cream as a moisturiser - again you can buy this in boots - i do this routine at night and in the morning a little witch hazel only - you can apply oilatum as it also acts as a great primer or dab on to spots- my husband has tried this he is a plasterer and has some patches of bad skin and his skin is now like a babies bum - i never get spots, wrinkles reduced and soft skin! This is my personal opinion only and i would advise to consult a doctor etc but it works for me!

I know different things work for people but I wouldn't advise Vaseline on skin and whilst the likes of oilatum suit some skins I would definitely advise seeking a good facialist and getting a handle on learning about your skin type and conditions...this enables you to make much more informed choices. Witch hazel on dehydrated skin isn't going to be a good mix and the OP needs to work on the breakouts whilst treating the dehydration. Oilatum would be too much on oily skin and Witch Hazel will only make dry patches worse.

OP, it's never too late to start looking after your skin and once you do get to know your skin and which products suit you will be able to get your core skincare range and try other things as you go.
I love creams and anything to do with skincare but I have a base range which I always have and always use and I pick up bits and pieces as and when I see something that catches my eye!

The therapist doing your facial will b able to better advise on how often you need a facial etc, I'm only going by limited info on your skin so once it's seen properly and assessed that will give you a much better guide as to what's needed.
Hope you get sorted soon

Shame your not near me I would of come to you :)
Thank you for your advice.
I am hoping this snow goes away now so I can get out and get an appointment booked

Hello Fluffle! I'm one of those unlucky people with horrible skin too! Or I used to anyway, I'm on the road to recovery after being put on medication to control my hormonal acne to finally give my skin a chance to repair itself. Whether you have dry, oily, combination, you name it skin, it's going to take work, there's no miracle product what you can just slap on and you have amazing skin. I started a thread about my acne a few months ago so if you go on my profile you should be able to find it :)

Anyway, before I began medication my skin was vile, literally couldn't look anyone in the eye if I wasn't wearing makeup, even makeup wouldn't cover up all the scarring and I had large cysts on my cheeks which had left quite bad scarring on my cheeks, after the acne became under control, I began a rigorous (haha) regime to get rid of the scarring, massive pores, dryness & awful tone which made me look dead! I decided to use Lush products, I've used one particular cleanser since I was 13 & it had worked wonders before my massive acne bout, it's a brand I ultimately trust, I'm not a veggie or animal rights freak, that's not why I chose them, I chose their products because they work.

I bought 3 cleansers, Herbalism, Dark Angels and Ultrabland. Herbalism for morning cleansing, Dark Angels for some serious exfoliation, we have some crazy scarring here & it needs to be gone, also to regulate skin cell renewal & to shed the grim dead cells which were making my skin look dull! & finally, Ultrabland for nurturing, lovely, massage-y, creamy goodness to protect the brand new cells. In the evening I'd exfoliate with Dark Angels, I literally massage it into my face for 10 minutes, rinse and apply Ultrabland straight away & massage that in, then apply a moisturiser on top, the one I have is called Celestial, the description of it is 'Transport sensitive skin to a higher plane. Specially formulated to create a light barrier on the skin to stop the loss of moisture and keep sensitive skin calm.'

Sorry about the huuuuge story, but I feel it is worth telling as my skin is now INCREDIBLE compared to what it was, the scarring has decreased by about half, tone is amazing & consistent & my pores on my nose are invisible & it feels AMAZING, makeup also sits so much better, I no longer have to re-powder during the day! All in all, they are products I wholeheartedly recommend so definitely drop in to a shop & have a chat about your skincare needs! I really hope this helps x
