Gel layer over l&ps

Hi

I have only recently qualified for gel nails and am currently doing my training for l&p.

After I have done my l&p enhancements I have been putting on a gel layer as it gives such a nice finish - is there any reason why I should not being doing this?

Sorry the other thing is - my course did not teach me to do smile lines - only use white tips - and I am now trawling thru the brilliant tutorials and your comments on this - but is it thought of as unprofessional to use white tips with either gel or l&ps?

There is no reason why you cant use a gel topcoat but I would learn to finish your L&P by buffing to a high shine it is a very satisfying thing to do.
I do both all depending on how much time I have and of course you charge extra for the gel topcoat.

There are loads of threads about white tips my personal opinion they have there place and in certain situations are great.
As you are just learning I would practice my smiles with powder and not use white tips then once you are confident with your work you can decide what is best for you.

What course did you do I am very surprised you haven't be taught to do smiles with L&P as this is a big part of an enhancement??

using a gel topcoat is common practice, so thats perfectly acceptable and professional.

using white tips with l/p acrylic is a start but it is essential to learn to use white powder to do your smilelines, otherwise how are you going to rebalance the nails when the white tip grows out and starts to show the natural smileline.

i would reccomend that for a start you use your white tips but apply white powder over them following the smile line. after a white it will be simple for you to move on to using natural tips and white powder as you will already be in control of the smilelines.

Thanks all - I had not thought of practising the smile lines on white tips - have tried it this afternoon and will be a great help - am going to keep practising getting high shine finish on my l&ps too but nice to know would be ok to do gel topcoat too.

The course I have done on gels is with Essentials which was great for a starter course but we have got a Creative Academy in Bournemouth now so am looking into doing a course with them to improve.

The course I did did not teach me smiles lines but am determined to perfect it!!

With the white tips the people I have been doing either let them grow then get a new set when they need replacing or I have to rebalance with a white smile line
