Hi,
I'm thinking of starting the NVQ level 2 and once I have completed that, I would ideally like to go mobile or work from home for myself.

At what point did you go mobile / work for yourself? Can you go mobile after just completing the level 2 course? (plus nail extensions??!)

Thanks
Krayzie xx

Hi there,

I am in a similar situation in that I'll soon be completing my NVQ Level 2 and would like to start up a mobile business after that. The only thing I would say is that I don't feel my course has given me enough training as I would want to go out on my own. Eg, we learn the basics of make-up but I wouldn't be happy going out and providing make-up treatments just on the basis of the college course.

I think NVQ 2 is great foundation for learning the basics eg waxing, manicures, pedicures, but I would want to add more qualifications (eg more advanced make-up, lash extensions etc) before starting up mobile.

If your confident in your waxing, mani's pedi's massage nails , get going start up offer what you are happy to offer. Then in time when you have earnt a bit and feel your ready do some extra courses to help with the other bits. Line up a load of friends and family to work on give them special offers or free in return for handing out your cards to everyone they know. This will help your bussiness as well as you having a good practice of how you want to do things when you go into peoples homes. That way you iron out any problems before getting a proper client. Ie. Taking enough towels or an extension lead or plugging your wax pot in as soon as you arrive and not filling too full so it melts enough for you to get started. Hope that blabbering helps a little. Good luck . Xx

Hi

I agree! I will finish my NVQ 2 this summer and will be going mobile. I'm 31 and am retraining, while still working full time in my office job. I'll only be part time as a mobile though - while I'd love to change careers completely I would never earn what I do now without owning a salon or something.

Make-up is my passion although I will be offering all the usual services. The level 2 make-up is very basic. Unless someone was particularly naturally gifted I would be hesitant getting my wedding make-up done by someone who had just done what was required for the level 2 and nothing else. I already have make-up experience, but have also been doing other make-up courses alongside the NVQ to build my confidence further. For this I have to say I recommend courses with working make-up artists, rather than colleges.

I'm doing a wedding hair course in April and eyelash extensions in July. Want to do spray tanning and intimate waxing too but am trying to hold my horses and master what I already know first. I'm so excited about it all I just want to learn everything!

i found that many mooms ago when i left college i wasnt greatly confident doing mobile, think it depends on what you want,i dont have the insentive to do that and lugging all the equipment around,i crave for salon atmosphere, all the chit chat and bounce of each other, think salon is way forward for expereince tho but hey good luck in what route you take

I'm mobile myself, and although I am level 3 qualified, I only offer level 2 treatments (at the moment!). So there's nothing wrong with working for yourself with a level2 qualification, you're perfectly entitled to.

When I qualified I found that, as most of the other geeks have said, I wasn't really overly confident in my treatments. I worked in salons for 6 years before going mobile, and I'm pleased I did. Working with other therapists gives you the option of learning new skills or ways of working without going on lots of courses. I think learning from someone elses experience is very valuable. (Eg, I leaned "how" to wax in college, but by working in salon, I learned the most "efficient" way to wax, in terms of time, and product - working on my own, I would only be half the therapist I am today). If you want to refine the skills you're learning in college this is the perfect way to do it. If you want to learn new skills, obviously you'll need to do the full accredited courses!

Personally I feel you would do well to try and get a little salon experience before going out on your own. Having said that, I'm sure there are loads of Geeks who went it alone from day 1 and are doing fine!

Hi

I would really like to get some salon experience. Do think many salons would be interested in someone who can only work Saturdays (I currently work full time)? I was thinking of trying to get some unpaid work experience somewhere, just to see what it was like!
