Well, I have been practicing the acrylic reverse application with tips for the last 2 weeks, and have applied them to 14 friends, with bookings for another 7 this week. I have been doing really well, and was really pleased with the results. I have been doing it free of charge, as I am only practicing, and most people have been happy for me to do it free of charge, knowing I am practicing, and not perfect.

Tonight was a nightmare though. On our course this week, we were shown how to apply sculptured acrylics. One of the other students applied them to my right hand, and I applied them to my right hand today, and they turned out okay. But, when applying to my friend tonight, I applied far too much white, and spent most of the night filing, filing and more filing. Three hours in fact!! It has really knocked my confidence, and am just glad it was a close friend who was totally okay about it. I applied far too much to the sides, so spent a lot of time trying to file the sides down, and because I was worried about nicking her, I was really slow. They turned out quite nice in the end, thankfully!!

I have got 6 more people to practice on this week. I know I will be very very careful not to apply too much.

This is the first major mistake I have made. I have only been on the course for two weeks, and this is my third week. We have one full day on the course, then we have to practice what we have learnt on at least 10 people for two weeks, then back to another one full day, it lasts for 8 weeks, so basically we are having 4 full days in class, and the rest practicing.

I have been on such a high up till tonight. I absolutely love learning and practicing, and hopefully, my friends, and people I have practiced on will let me carry on after my course ends. And, I if I feel I am competent will start to charge them at a reduced rate, until I get more experience.

I hope tomorrows sculptures will be easier than tonights!!

Oh don't worry about it..It'll take a while before they're great..the best thing to do is not letting it knock your confidence!!

Just carry on at the end of the day if they don't look how u want them to..they're not paying they can't complain!!

Have u got any pics hun?xxx

Oh please dont let it get to you, mistakes... we all make them. Thing is is to learn from them and move on. I used to do the same the, spent move time filing than anything else. You soon learn as you pick up your bead if is the right size or not. Be calm, take your time, confidence will bloom again.

aaahh, dont stress.

i can see by your post that you know exactly where you went wrong. so next time you do it it will be in the front of your mind and you'll acheive your results you are looking for.

anyways you had the skill to fix it, we all rely on our file much more in the early days. soon your application will be more skilled and you will have a lot less work to do with your file.

and you have so many models lined up, thats fantastic because practice is what will help you the most .

be strong and carry on. even more experienced techs have off days, so dont worry so much.

I agree with everybody else........we all make mistakes i have been doin nails now for 5 years and now and then i still make the odd mistake the trick is to apply in small amounts that way you can always ad a bit more if there is not enough. Carry on being confident though as you never stop learning x

Thank you all so much for your encouragement. I had a free night tonight, so practiced on a training hand. It has really helped a lot, and I feel confident enough to practice on a friend tomorrow. It is the sides that I need practice on, just getting it to go on neatly. I am thinking of investing in an electric file too. We got to have a practice on one in the last class, and I was amazed at how good it was!

I invited friends, and friends of friends on Facebook to have free acrylics from me while I am training. The response was fantastic. Although, I panicked a bit when the bookings started, but everyone has been lovely, and even though they I knew they weren't perfect, they have all said they loved them.

My tutor was pleased with my before and after pics, but said I needed to file the sides more to taper them slightly to avoid spatula nails when they grow. I have took this on board, and did my own and they do look nicer.I do need to practice perfecting my smile lines, but she never mentioned that to me! I have told all my friends to contact me, when they need taking off, as I wouldn't want them to ruin their nails trying to take them off themselves. We will be practicing infills and rebalance in two weeks, so the sculptures I apply this week should be ready for this.

Have just put all my stuff away for the night. Ready for my next "client" lol in the morning. I have all the evenings booked this week, with 3 bookings for Friday! Got a few more contacts to contact for bookings next week. Hope when I get my certificate, they will want me to do their nails for them then. A few of them have never even had their nails done before, and have said they feel fantastic with them on, and will be asking me to do them for them in future! Its very promising at the moment. Feel much better tonight.

Thanks again.

Oh, by the way, I will try and upload some of my before and afters for hints and tips from you all :)

Just remembered the friend who is coming tomorrow, has not had acrylics for 6 months or so, she has just had gel nails. She said that her two thumb nails are a bit thin, and sore, and seem a bit flakey. Will I be able to apply acrylics to them? She seems quite happy for me to do so, but just wondered if it is normal practice to apply to flakey nails!

Arrghh, finding applying the forms is sometimes, fiddly, and takes up my time. I am still taking far too long to apply sculptures, 2 3/4 hours!!! I find tips much quicker, but still take 2 hours for this too. I really need to get quicker, but don't want to rush, and make mistakes. I have applied my 22nd set since 17th Jan, with another five sets to apply by the end of the week. People seem to love the sculptures though, saying they feel much lighter than tips, but the tips do look just as nice too. Is it better for me to apply sculptures when it comes to infills, and rebalancing? I have't been trained to do either of these as yet, but will be shown this coming sunday. I am assuming, that with tips it would be harder to rebalance, but maybe not?

Hi sounds like you are practising a lot, that's great. And don't worry about speed, it comes with practice as loads mentions.
About your question, when you infill or rebalance you file down existing product (there's a tutorial somewhere to explain how much and where) but you don't remove the free edge (you could but that's another story and something you can look into when qualified and confident) so you won't have to use neither tips or forms.

Hi, it is infills and rebalancing for sculptures I would like to read up on, as that is what I have been practicing. I don't suppose you could point me in the right direction on how to find the tutorials, thanks:)

Wow, what a great tutorial.
