Still does it makes us less professional?

Not at all, but we do have far less training than a hairdresser, their knowledge is covering a far wider area than ours - that we cannot argue with. We just specialise in extensions, even the units in the hairdressing NVQ for extensions do not cover what we know, it swings both ways.

I'm not saying there knowledge isn't wider but the op said about keeping this forum for professional hairdressers..
And having a extension geek forum separate - it felt kind of like 'let's get them extensionists off of here.
I'm in no way arguing but that's what people will feel like from this post. I'm NVQ level 2 also not experienced in anyway as not long after I qualified I gave it all up. As an apprentice I didn't get what I felt was all the training I needed in the salon. Just got used as what I class a nobody!
I am looking to further my education again and get back into the swing of it all ( although it's proving harder then I thought to find a re fresher course)

I think it would be nice of there wasn't so much tension between hairdresser and extensionists were not bad people

I feel as we do extensions day in day out then yes we do know more about the extension side of it. No matter on how meny courses you do, it's like most things you start to learn more once you've passed (e.g driving) But in no way would i ever class my self as a hairdresser.

I think when extensionists claim to know more about hair than hairdressers, it breeds resentment. I trained for three years as a hairdresser. I've done two extension courses, totalling 7 days in all, still more than the majority of extensionists on this site. I can categorically state that extension training is nowhere near that of a professional hairdresser. It's like the receptionist claiming to know more than the doctor. Sorry if you're offended, but being on both sides of the profession, I feel as though this needs clearing up.

I didn't say I knew more about hair then a hairdresser. I know some people are like that. But most of us are not. I trained for 2 years as a hairdresser and have done 2 extension courses. Just this post makes us feel like we know absolutely naff all.

Still does it makes us less professional?

It doesn't make anectensionist less professional no. I'm an exttensionist myself, but this part of the forum is for hairdressers. Extensionists do a 2-3 day course. Hairdressing takes years.
Go to beauty geek nails, skin and beauty are all separated yet could all be covered under one title, "beauty", same applies here. They're two different things extensions an chemical/technical questions as opposed to extensions. Non proffesionaals in the hairdressing trade shouldn't have access to things they're not trained or competent in and vice versa.

Look at biz geek. All business questions go in there. Not in here :-/

Also I don't class my self as a hairdresser either even though I have the basic knowledge there from my nvq I still don't know enough

I'm both a professional hairdresser, and an extensionist, and I think it should be separated. People who only do hair extensions have different needs to those of us who do all of it, and I would prefer to know who's who.
I got into trouble for giving a highly technical answer to a 'how to cut ext' question once, being called 'rude' for giving the correct answer, as opposed to 'just snip a bit off the bottom Hun', so it would be better to know who we're dealing with.

How do you get in trouble for giving advice on cutting?

Surely if the cutting courses or the part of the course that covers the blending of extensions is any good then everyone would understand technical answers

Does the fact that some of us are just extensionists make us unprofessional or something?

No what I was meaning is that if someone looks at the profile they might get the impression that extensionists are hairdressing pro's there is a big difference with being trained in Hairdressing & being trained in extensions. There should be 2 options to click hair & extensions.

Absolutely!!
I had to click separate buttons for hair, beauty, brows etc on my profile. It's no biggie.

I think it would benifit it being separate yes. But dies this mean as I'm not Taft experienced in my hairdressing that I couldn't participate on the hair forum

I have also seen threads on people asking about colouring extensions. No pro colouring product should be used if your not trained in colouring. If your extension only trained no way should you be carrying out pro hairdressing services. I'm not saying all extensionists do this but I have seen the odd thread where the extensionist is asking about carrying out a service they are not trained in.

If you're a qualified hairdresser, or working towards that qualification, then of course people will help you. What you need to remember is that we can spot people wanting pro help for their own hair, so they don't need to pay a stylist. I personally will never help there.
The hair forum is for pro help, not personal hair help.

No I'm nvq 2 trained but want to go back and re fresh as I feel I didn't learn enough. I don't class myself as a hairdresser just and extensionist based on the fact I don't know as much as I would like to hense why I would like to be part of both forums if separated.

I don't think us going on only extension courses makes us any less professional as hair extensionists - obviously were not trained hairdressers and nor do we think we are. I agree some people who go on one day courses think they're amazing in the industry but any course you go on whether it be an NVQ or a hair extension course your as good as you put into it. I've known some amazing extensionists who have only done a 1 day course. I have also known some absolutely shocking hair dressers - and vise versa.

We are not any less professional in terms as hair extensions - not at all. Like I said it's how much we put into it. I spend my days researching, looking into things, reading about sciences of hair etc. I just wouldn't benefit from an NVQ (personally I wouldn't want to spend a year doing perms) I don't want to colour hair, I don't want to perm etc etc - so quite frankly I don't want to waste 2 years in my life for something I'm not going to do.

Extensions only interest me and it's my love and passion (I'm pretty sure I love it more then my OH - haha)

I have done a total if aprox 8/9 days worth of extension training plus I did a 7 day intense course in cutting - for normal hair not just extensions - although I do not cut my clients natural hair only cut and blend extensions. I'm looking to go on more training later this year. Does that make me a less professional? - I bloody hope not lol.

I know I'm not the best - but I love doing it.

Love, peace and respect <3

If you have your nvq 2 you are hairdresser trained no one is saying you can't be part of the hair forum. What the debate is that it should be separated to hair forum & extension forum if you are trained in both you use both forums.

No you are a extension pro. As us hairdressers are hair pro's as this covers a wider aspect in hair. This is why I think on the profile part we should have 2 options hair pro & extension pro being a hair pro is different to being a extension pro. We are all or working to be pro's in out chosen fields. You are a extension pro as that's where you have trained & made a living out of like I am a hair pro as I have trained & made a living out of that.we are just pro's in different things.

I am both fully trained in hairdressing and extensions and love reading all posts but to be honest it would make life so much easier to have different forums! :D

Just for the record, there are no plans imminent or otherwise to sub-divide The Hair Geek Forum.

If you do not wish to read about hair extensions, then simply pass these threads by and leave them for those who do.

Its not the hairdressers board, its the hair professionals board so as people running businesses in the hair industry we're in the right place thanks!

The Hair Geek*(206 Viewing)Professionals discussing all aspects of the hair industry

I dont know why it causes so much fuss! Hairdressers dont reply to extension threads, extensionists dont reply to colour threads so what does it matter. Possibly if there was more styling or cutting threads it wouldnt be so secular: colour v extensions.

Very good point above.

Another point to look at is that extensions as a whole are VERY popular in today's market probably more so that ever before as it's offered much more widely and not just for the rich and famous anymore. As a result, there will be a lot of questions/chat about this.

Just hop over to the Skin forum and what are most threads about? LASH EXTENSIONS.

Agreed. It does seem that hairdressers 'work their butts off'....people assume we dont, to build successful businesses & trying to be the best at what we do? I agree there should be separated forums, but as already said, it wont happen (though you'd think admin would listen to the user's of the forum)....

Both extensionists, hairdressers & those who do both work very hard...thats all

IN ALL SERIOUSNESS, MAYBE MAKE A POLL ASKING WHETHER THEY SHOULD BE SEPARATE?
THE ADMIN MAY LISTEN TO THE MAJORITY?!
