Just a quick question really (as im not a hair geek)

My friend bought some straighteners from her friends salon, at a discounted rate but still - they cost £50.

She has used them twice and now they have completely stopped working.

The girl is saying that she can give her a ''guarentee'' card and she can send them off.

I thought you had 28 days to return things to a shop if its faulty even longer?

Also, what good is a guarentee card if she has not even sent it off to get the guarentee and they have broken?

any advice geeks so i can help her out xxxxxx

As far as im aware you have 28 days to return anything to a store (sometimes its 14 days but it is stipulated on the receipt) and then a 1-3 year guarantee (manufacturers warranty), have a look for a number on the box if your having no luck at the store.

The sales of goods act doesn't define any time frame only 'reasonable time' this means that something that is only meant to last short term can't be returned after say six weeks as an exmaple an apple couldn't be returned after six weeks saying it had gone off. However something that is meant to last say 5 years like a 5 year diary, it would be reasonable to return that if it has fallen apart after 6 months.

The act also states that you have to reurn the product to where you bought it as you have a contract with them not the manufacturer, the retailer has a contract with the manufacturer/wholesaler and the retailer shoudl refund/replace for you and send back to their supplier. The fact that they were cheap should only come into play if they were cheap because they were damaged ?

So your friend should return them say they are not of merchantable quality and can she have a refund / replacement please - if that is refused she should contact the manufacturers as they as a reputable business will probably sort it but they will also want to know where she bought them.

You have no rights whatsoever to return none faulty goods and shops such as argos do it purely for customer service and to get people to try things they might not buy if they couldn't see what they were like at home.

thanks guys. you have been very helpful. salon made her contact the suppliers herself. Just shows what sort of customer service that the hairdresser offers and she definately wont be going there again!!!!
