It saddens me that unless we grow it in our own garden, we never know what we're eating :(

I fear you are correct.
What's to be done about it?

I feel the same but when I mentioned it on here I got a lot of "if you don't like it don't eat it" comments.
It may be that where I live there are a few halal supermarkets dedicated to halal food and I don't see why there is a need for it in Tesco etc... Or that I feel there should be a halal section there, not just mixed in.
X

I'm glad I'm not the only one to feel this way.
Tomme you are completely right.
I'm not a vegetarian but this does not make me a hypocrite. I would choose to 'not eat it if I don't like it' but it seems we are no longer given the option.
It's really upset me as I naively thought you could only get halal meet from dedicated places. X

Genuine question, why is this worse than the horse meat thing? I don't eat meat so to me it's still a dead animal, it was still slaughtered to feed people. So unless you're against it religiously I'm not sure I understand why it matters whether it's halal or not?

Is it just the pre-stunning thing? I know they say that the animals have to still be alive before they're slaughtered, but most of the companies asked in the article are saying all or the majority of the animals are pre-stunned.

I'm gonna be biased I know, so I hope this doesn't come off as judgey, it's not meant to. I am just curious why it matters.

A lot of them now say they only stun a percentage.

I guess it's no worse, only in my own opinion the major supermarkets etc didn't know it was horsemeat, but in this as they know its halal meat, which means they are knowingly being deceptive.

And although I appreciate that any slaughtering of an animal is horrible, the methods used in halal are much worse...drawn out with suffering.

I have full respect for all vegetarians, it's something that I tried for 8yrs but found too difficult. but if I can have any choice in the matter I'd prefer the animals to at least be humanely treated (as much as possible)

And I don't think you're judging at all :)
I guess I may not be a veggie, or strongly religious, but I have strong beliefs all the same.
I hope I don't offend anyone with this xx

The simple answer: Don't buy meat from supermarkets.
Also Halal meat is just  It's worse than the horse meat because they basically sacrifice an animal.

Oh come on, I know if I had to kill any animal or see them slaughtered i'd be a vegetarian.
The animals are killed for us meat eaters to eat - its not nice, at the end of the day lovely cows with soft eyelashes and cute lambs are all sent to the slaughterhouse.

Its great to have principals and it'd be great if we could afford free range organic fairtrade everything but when we order a curry do we think - better not because this chicken has been killed using a Halal method?:?:

At least 2 questions are being asked, or that's how it seems to me.

Should supermarkets be completely honest about labelling?
Yes, without doubt.

Is Halal wrong?
I don't feel I can judge. I find it difficult to explain, but I think that different cultures have different rules and traditions. If I'm not from a culture I find it hard to understand some of those rules, but there is much wrong in my own culture too!

I guess that is down to the individuals personal principles. If I ate meat then yes I would avoid Halal. Supply and demand and all that jazz. That said, I decided 11 years ago not to eat meat again and it was the best decision I ever made.

I couldn't agree more, and maybe it should be the supermarket scruples we should be discussing here and not our cultural differences.

I completely agree.
This is my point, we don't know what we're eating and we SHOULD be given the choice so that we can then decide for ourselves wether or not its ok x

I would also question the motives behind The Daily Mail splashing this particular story over their paper right now when there are already a lot of racial tensions in the country, and these kind of stories can be twisted and used by far right extremists for their own agenda.
All the more reason to remove the cultural element from the equation and concentrate on the labelling and deceit of the supermarkets and their suppliers.

I'm a little concerned about this thread now. I do worry that extremists can easily read all this...

I think that very soon all I will be eating is tomatoes, potatoes, chillies and salad leaves....as that is all I am growing in my garden this year :wink2:
Nothing extreme there ?

Just strawbs and spinach for me - mind you father in law is donating a few tomato and cucumber plants... nothing like variety :D

I think supermarkets should label things properly and I think it's disgusting that they do not.

I don't buy supermarket meat but if I did I wouldn't choose to eat halal. My personal opinion.

All my meat comes from a local farm. I can even ask the name of the cow. They also do organic vegetables and fruit. It costs me £45 a week. I havent been in a super market for about 10 months and instead support local business. There are some brilliant farm shops near me in rural Notts and even a specialist farm who have buffalo, ostrich, venison and wild game. I believe in living off the land wherever possible.
As for the Halal issue. We should respect all cultures and am shocked to see that Islam automatically conjours up images of extremism. In my opinion commercialism is a far more prevalent and the mass export in abhorrant conditions to tgis country for your consuption then the far less cruel Halal methods of slaughter.
