Just want to start off by saying how impressed I am with this site - love looking at everyone's work and hearing your opinions, you guys are very talented!

Anyway, i just wanted a quick rant - but does anyone find it as annoying as I do when friends and people you talk to make out that being a nail tech is an easy job?

I love working in this industry, and consider myself very lucky that this is my career, but it drives me mental when people suggest that our job is too easy and we don't work as hard as they do?!

My partner manages a bar, and I realise he is on his feet all day, but sometimes he [jokes] and says "oh yeah, like YOU'VE had a hard day! Sat around and chatting"

And one of my friends often asks how work is and when I say "really bloody busy" he replies with "Heh, yeah, filing old dear's nails - how hard can THAT be?!"

Does anyone else experience / get annoyed by this?

Welcome to the site hun.
Yes and yes:green: but I've had a few who've tried it for them selves and funny thing is they never mention the Rio kit again or what an easy job I have:rolleyes:
For the rest I just smile and look smug, hell if they want to think I've got a cushy job let them, just means you got it right doesn't it?

I absolutely agree and used to feel quite similar when heard sarcasm in other people talks about nail technician career.
I have recently changed my career quite radically from working as a Senior Manager in international company and, therefore, I have faced with confusion and sarcasm – You, with your university education, experience etc. to a nail technician??? Yes, and why not? I love my new career as it gives me great satisfaction and opportunity to be creative. And I am not worried about what other people think is right or not as this is my life and my choice :)
Also I have realised that there are a lot of bias about beauty industry and people are influenced by what they hear, read and see. Quite a lot of these critical people are dissatisfied people who are not happy with themselves and probably their careers, so, with humiliating others they try to raise their self-cofidence.

Probably my joy and enthusiasm shut up some criticism and sarcasm as I haven’t heard it for some time :)

do you know what, we do have a `cushy`job. We get to do something we really love, get to meet great people, play about with lots of great stuff and socialise all day, AND we get paid for it. It is hard work but very rewarding. Bet theres not many people you know can say they get this from their job.
So, just smile:) and excuse their ignorance:lol:

Oh I get this all the time...and I just smile and say....'yup I love my job, I get to sit down all day, chat, have a coffee when I feel like it ( withing reason but they don't know that ),be creative, no stressy manager breathing down my neck, and complete job satisfaction.Don't you wish you had a job like mine?'
Amazing how fast they shut up

I agree its them who has the problem not me so I just smile and get on with it. I love my job and thats all that matters, I have long ago stopped telling people I am exhausted, stressed, too busy to pee  its all Fabulous Baby!

My personal feelings are if you are doing something you LOVE doing, it's not really work. I'm not saying that being a nail tech doesn't have its challenges... I've had jobs I've HATED and jobs I've LOVED.

It's far easier doing something you love than hate. When I'm in the salon doing what I love, I don't feel like I'm working...I feel like I'm at home with friends. Does that make sense?

Just keep doing what you're doing...and enjoy!

once when working on a 16 yr old she said she wanted to be a nail tech.
and then qualified it with 'you get to sit down all day'

i enjoy my work but we all know there is more to it than meets the eye. especially if you are going to earn a living from it.

hi everyone!
it was only yesterday morning that i had a lady in for a file and polish on her toes , she began by saying "do you not get bored doing nails all day", i replyed no not at all but i do other beautytreatments aswell. she then told me she works at TESCO, then when i began painting her toes with a BLACK polish she then added...."bet it doesnt take much concentration to do this job though"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
How dare someone that works on the checkout at tesco( no offence anyone) to make out my job is boring and doesnt need concentration! i felt like painting the polish all over her toes ...oops i wasnt concentrating!!!!:mad:

xx

Yeah, i know it can be quite frustrating but just laugh it off. I LOVE my job and i know i'm really lucky to feel that way. Even when i'm knackered, i'm satisfied and i never get bored.

I'm a beauty therapist and sometimes my boyfriend jokes about my "easy" job, but after giving me a back massage and me asking how he'd be feeling doing that for 8 hours he changes his mind, lol.

I find that a lot of people think you must be quite stupid to go into this career too. They don't realise its just the opposite. So if they're annoying me i casually mention that its the equivalent to 3 A levels, including science and they soon change their tune xxx
