Hi has anyone had a gastric band and if so what are your opinions? Do you think getting one with a bmi of 30.6 is worthwhile? Any comments appeciated:biggrin:

My friend had it done 2 yrs ago & to be honest she has only lost a tiny bit of weight, I spoke to my doc about having or done & it's not a quick fix procedure, it doesn't stop you snacking & if you over eat you can stretch the bottom of your gullit which makes your stomach bigger again so you can still over eat, ur bmi isn't that high & you will get a result with sensible eating & exercise xxx

DON'T DO IT!!!!! Everyone I know who has had that type of procedure has lost weight in the BEGINNING but every one of them has gained weight back.

My advice: eat sensibly, write down everything you eat, drink water and exercise. :)

Thanks ppl, I am always dieting losing a couple of stone and putting on a stone here and there. They aren't even crash diets they are sensible eating and exercise but I always seem to give up then suddenly realise I'm back to square one. I felt like this was my only option but it would cost around £7000 to get done and I am not big enough to get it done by the NHS.

I do emotionally eat and overeat so I guess this would not be an option either lol. Diet and excercise is easier said than done, but you are right if I can lose two stone and keep it off it would be a great achievement :(

Have you tried prescription obesity pills. Its just that I am over weight becuase of meds I have to take and they have sugested them to me in the past. The only reason i dont take them up on it, is becuase I want to get to change the meds im taking to a safer and more modern type of treatment, which the specialists are looking into at the mo. They tried me on a drug called metformin (for type 2 diabetes because the meds im on can put you into a pre diabetic state. which im not in but they thaught they would try them anyway as other patients have lost on then, they didnt work for me but have for others). I would go to the doctor and explain your concerns, and make sure you dont have any health conditions that is making you put on weight. Then ask if you cant try the treatments because if you dont seem to be able to lose weight normaly, like I cant, and are considering something drastic like surgery, maby pills are the way to go. Dont bother just buying them from the chemist as they dont work, go and see a doctor, and dont give up, even if you try some that dont agree with you, try others, just dont give up. xxxxx:Love:

Thank-you I have lost weight before, the last time though I followed the same diet I had done previously but did not work. I think I will go to my GP and explain my concerns as it will be cheaper for them to prescribe me pills than to treat me for obesity related illnesses later down the line. I just feel like I have hit rock bottom and I think some people don't realise it is not as easy as it sounds to lose weight or else everyone would be skinny. I don't think many people are fat intentionality. Its a shame that I feel the need to do something drastic like surgery but I think you just get to a certain point after trying and trying. Thanks for the help everyone:Love:

My sister in law has just paid £2,500 to have a gastric ballon fitted in Prague. Now a couple of months on she hasnt hardly lost anything except her money.
My friend had the band fitted and lost a couple of stone to start but then it started to creep back on and now I think she looks bigger than ever.
There is no quick fix, ive bought small plates and im putting less food on it and ive rationed the vino to 1 bottle a fortnight, so far ive lost 10lb.

I feel your pain! I've been heavy all my life but gained a bunch of weight when I quit smoking. Recently, I've lost about 30 lbs. The key is: WANTING to lose the weight (not the same as wanting to be thin) then finding what works for you. I don't know what you weigh or how tall you are but I think a healthy calorie intake for MOST women is between 1200 to 1500 calories, daily.

I joined a website (totally FREE) www.sparkpeople.com They have loads of help there and tools to get you going.

I use the food tracker...you'd be surprised how much we under estimate our caloric intake when we don't write stuff down.

I did the BEST when I measured EVERYTHING that went in my mouth and tracked it. I kept to my calorie range on most days, walked a few days a week and drank 8 glasses of H20. I consistently lost two lbs. a week!

Somewhere along the line (the HOLIDAYS) I've gotten off track and have put on a few lbs. I NEED to get back to where I was before I put it all back on.

My philosophy: you are NEVER a failure until you quit TRYING!

Chin up...I'm in your corner!

I do emotionally eat and overeat so I guess this would not be an option either lol.:(

it's my personal opinion that you need to deal with your emotional issues before you will be able to be happy with your weight and/or lose weight. Otherwise regardless of what pill you take, what diet you follow, what operation you have you will still overeat as you will still have those issues surrounding you. I promise you that I'm not some weird hippy dippy person! In fact, I'm pretty much what you describe yourself as. I'm 2st heavier than my body should be and I've always overeaten, ruled by my emotions be it sad, happy, depressed, whatever! I've yo-yo'd for so many years and it's only been in the past 6 months or so that I've started dealing with the things that make me overeat and my weight is now slowly but steadily coming off. It's by no way a quick fix but I really think it's the only one, certainly for me. Best of luck whichever route you decide to take!! You'll always have people to cheer you on here!! PGx

I was waiting for someone to say that. I totally agree, although when I did lose the weight I was so confident and happy with myself but obviously there were psychological reasons for me overeating to ruin all my good effort and they should be addressed. Thanks this has made me re-evaluate my
past experiences and I'm feeling more motivated to try and go down the 'normal healthy' route, I will speak to my doctor also and he may just tell me to do the same:Love:

I know exactly what you mean-I've been able to lose a bit weight before and felt on top of the world. But as soon as a difficult time comes along I'm binging again and the weight is back on in a quarter of the time it took to lose it-argh!!!! I just know how down and disheartened I get with myself when I spend money/effort/time trying to lose weight-I would hate to think of someone else feeling that bad ;-). Good luck with whichever method you choose. PGx

I would just like to add if anyone has had this done and doesn't want to post on this public forum, I would really appreciate any pm's just to hear the pro's and con's of your experiences:biggrin:

My sister has had it done - twice. She had it done a few years ago, then Easter time 2 years ago the band slipped, she had to have it removed, wait 12 months and then have another put in.

She looks great now BUT, she goes to the gym 6 days a week - sometimes twice a day. It did help her initially to lose the weight but now she's a gym junkie that follows the strictest diet. Her aim is to start competing as a figure competitor at body building competitions next year.

I have a gastric band!....there I said it!!

Ive lost around 3stone in the first 18months...nice and steady...I have no hanging skin and now Im lighter I go running with a running club Ive joined and do 10k a week.

I have some key hole scars very small and with bio oil they are much less noticeable.

I paid privately and had a bmi of 35....am 5ft 4 and was a size 20.

Im now lighter than I have been for yrs and you know what at my age I wanted to do it and not struggle all my life.

Now foods eaten because I need it to live not because I live to eat it.

If anyone wants more info or wants to ask questions send me a pm xxx

How about you get together with some friends and enter an event like the Race for Life?

hi there, apparantly you can now get a hypnoband! (hypnosis that makes you feel like you have had the band fitted) thousands cheaper and no surgery, just a thought as hypnosis has helped me with weight issues,

Brilliant! Sounds perfect! It will be hard for me to find someone in NI to do this but I'm sure I will find someone :) I will make the effort again but after trying and trying for years I feel like I need something to help me along. I don't have a problem with fitness or lack nutritional knowledge I have an emotional eating problem and no matter how much exercise I do It will not budge the weight enough without the right diet as diet is 70% of weight-loss exercise helps to accelerate it and sculpt the body.

There was a story on A Current Affair here in Oz a couple of weeks ago about people getting hypnotherapy and saying it is as successful as those who have had the band.

Weird weight loss

I know people who have had the pills and it's a quick fix for the short term only when you have to come off them the weight piles on twice as fast and twice as much an the fat goes in areas where it shouldn't be and you end up with severe cellulite and dimpled skin fat everywhere it looks awful. There is a call for orlistat to be removed from shelves. Liver and kidney doctors want it banned also cancer specialist are calling for a ban as the rates of bowel cancer have gone through the roof in women who have been taking this diet pill.

Hi

I had a gastric band in July 2009, to date I've lost 4st 8lb. As said previously it's not a quick fix and if you are an emotional overeater I don't think it would be really suitable as you can stretch your pouch. Another option would be a gastric bypass but I think that would be too drastic and permanent, I chose not to have it done despite the fact I would have lost weight much quicker initially with the bypass.
