Hello hairdressers

i have a question about chemically straightening hair.

i went to try and get my hair chemically straightened recently and was told they wouldn't do it cause my hair might break!

i'm unfourtunate enough to have the WORST hair in the world. it's very dry with fuzzy curls but that's the way it's always been, it's my natural hair not damaged.

In the 90's i had a couple of perms and they turned out grand. My hair wasn't much curlier but the curls stayed together so it didn't look fuzzy. Then i used to just get my hair braided all the time, so finally here's my question

If chemically straightening your hair is the same chemicals as perms why won't they let me get it done?

Is there anything i can do to de-fuzz my mop?

please help as i'm getting too old for the braided, hippy look:eek:

because when the hair is in rollers its not put under any stress , when its straightened it can involve alot of combing through to pull the hair down , and this is done when the hair is most vulnerable .

Hi, if your hair is completely natural with no colour on it at all and in good condition I cannot see why they wouldnt do it for you ,

if it is highlighted or bleached anywhere at all, or if it has been in the past
then I would understand this may be why ,

also straightening irons can cause a lot of damage to the hairs structure if they are used a lot do you think may be the case ?

I straighten Afro Carribean hair with Wella strate and it comes out amazingly sleek and straight with the hot iron method ,:)
but I wont touch it if it has any signs of damage as it does have to be quite strong to take a bit of combing through ect.... as Liana says ,

it is a costly job because a skilled hairdresser is needed to do it and they have to stay with it, hot ironing it through and straightening and drying it all off a few times , it can take a half a days skilled work and some hairdressers find it more cost effective for the salon to do cutting or colouring work instead,
So..... you may only find a few salons that specialise in this area and if they do I suppose you can expect it to be an expensive job ,
also you may be better off going to a College or a salon where they specialse in Afro Carribean hair
and you will be sure they will have had lots of experience in straightening

Thanks girls, that's really helpful. i'll try to find an afro carribean salon. My hair hasn't been dyed in years and i only have it blow dried straight once in a blue moon so i think it should be ok. There was a bit of a language barrier with the lad who was looking at my hair (it was a korean salon) so i couldn't get much info just no no no!

I'll let you know if i get sleek locks!!! thanks again for your help:)

You wouldnt fancy having a loose perm through it then? Less damaging and very fashionable at the mo.

There are various places which have a 12 week blowdry, that are supposed to be real good

;Linkage
The Original 12 Week Blowdry

Hope it helps :)
