Hi,

I have done the first three days of the CND Foundation course and am trying to practice like mad before the fourth day, however i'm hitting a problem which I hope someone may be able to offer some suggestions as to what is causing it.....

I'm having problems with the white and chipping, I did a set on my friend yesterday and she has had several chips on the white today, I also did a set last night and as I was finishing the nails, two chipped on the white as I was filing them...... the nails feel quite brittle.

I have done lots of seaches on here and cannot find anything to help and wont be able to speak to my educator until after the bank holiday and this is driving me mad - any help appreciated

Hi, are the nails tip and overlay, sculptured or natural nail overlays ?.
Is it complete corners that are breaking or little chips at the sides, free edge etc... ?

Are you sure you are building them to the correct thickness and your beads are of the correct ratio ie: not too wet or dry.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, my friend was tips and overlay, if anything they were built far too thickly and needed an immense amount of filing! Cannot say i'm 100 sure on the ratio as i'm struggling with it and was wondering if I could have been too dry and if this has cause of it or whether something else could have possibly caused it, its mainly at the corners.

One of the ones last night broke at the corner and then the whole of the zone 1 followed it

This could be your problem, if not the mix ratio. If you are filing too aggressively over newly applied l&p, it will cause further weakness to the enhancement, therefore leading to further breakdown. L&p needs at least 24-48 hours to fully set up. If your ratio is out then that will add to the whole situation.

Don't fret too much about it at this point though, you are learning and believe me, mistakes will end up to be your godsend, if that makes sense. Your biggest learning curves are made with these.

Keep at it and you have chosen wonderful educators

Thanks for your help - guess i'm just feeling a bit disheartened at the minute

Yes, I have watched the cnd vidoes times over, read nail class and lurked in the nail forum for a couple of years!

I didn't say in my original post that I had previously spent months and I mean many months and many many bottles of monomer! trying to get to grips with L & P after starting Essential Nails - i know the feelings of a lot regarding home study - I'd previously done gel with them and then & conversion course with michelle porter (so i'm not totally new to nails but have always wanted to do L & P) this is way before I found geek and my path would have been different if I'd have found geek 3 or 4 years ago.

I suppose I thought that when I did the foundation course that everything would 'click' but guess I was being niave - I expected to come away knowing how to perfect mix ratio etc, don't get me wrong, I can get a nail on now but they look awful, apart from the chipping problem (which is possibly as mentioned above agressive filing because honestly they were like breeze blocks!) I'm having problems with zone 3 appearing to be missing aswell - its almost like I have filled my head full of stuff, know what I want to acheive but my hands dont want to conform lol

Sorry for the long post and thanks for your kind words - I think i'll contact my educator after the weekend

Hey ... Rome wasn't built in a day. You are filing way too much ... that is basically your problem. L&P is the hardest system to get right if you are not naturally inclined on the artistic side. If you want it you will do it. There is no magic formula and you're using the best there is so hang on in there and give a proper go ... if you find you are getting nowhere then it is time for a 121 with a CND educator.

Thanks for all your replies, believe me I am givng it a proper go, my eyes are now stinging - time to pack in a cuppa I think!

Aww Please try not to stress while doing nails,
I have been there myself many times where I could have happily thrown my products out of the window ! lol.
But sometimes the more you stress and the more problems you are looking for the worse it is for you.

Try to just stay nice and calm and stick to the basics you now know, such as your bead pick up and placement... don't rush it, just let it flow ( are you working with retention + ?) Place... breathe ;) and work your bead make it politely do what YOU want it to... you are in control of your product, do not let it control you.

I always found my best nails were done during my 'play times' and I couldn't achieve the same on a real client, I put it down to the fact I was enjoying myself during playtimes, no stress, no rushing times, Just watching everything I was doing carefully so I knew what my products did, and when they did it...

When you say your Zone 3 appears to be missing, do you mean as you are filing at the end, it is disappearing ?

Hi,

Yes am using Retention +, i'm not sure if i'm being too heavy handed, when I place zone three i'm angling my brush up, pushing out towards right hand sidewall and stroking up, back round to left hand side and stroke up and then stroke up to the centre - now its not happening on all the nails i'm doing but when I come to finishing there is nothing at all in zone 3, incidently, it doesnt happen on when i do them on the nail trainer for some bizarre reason but all of the real life people I have practiced on it has happened on some of the nails :(

CND L&P requires a nice firm press but a very very light smooth over .. you are placing your bead and then pulling it all off again with too heavy brushing.

Thanks, i'll do a few more after the kids are in bed - I did have better results this afternoon though, so thank you all for your kind input
