Hi Ladies

I am after a bit of advice please, where I am going wrong, what I need to include into my home facials (for me).

1. Cleansing milk, wiped off with damp cotton pads
2. Toner
3. Steam face
4. Exfoliate, wiped off with warm sponge
5. Mask, wiped off with warm sponge
6. Toner
7. Eye cream
8. Face serum
9. Moisturiser

Thank you

What makes you think you are doing something wrong?

Cos I'm an amature and not professional?

You appear to be doing pretty well to me! :) Just make sure you are using the right products for you skin type so they are neither too harsh or not doing anything

It is brill that you want to care for your skin. You will reap the rewards later in life. I don't what products you are using, but will add that it is important that you use the right products for your skin type.

Whilst it is fine to remove the cleansing milk with cotton pads, it would probably be cheaper to rinse off with warm water and then any excess with a damp cotton pad. Toner (using a cotton pad) also helps remove excess cleanser and any remaining traces of dirt.

Personally I would swap around the steaming with the exfoliation. Exfoliate first (only once or twice a week) and then gently steam (only once or twice a week). Exfoliation helps to loosen the clogged pores and remove dead skin cells. Once this is done, the steaming helps to open the pores so that the 'clogs' can be more easily removed.

How are you planning to steam? Also remember not to get to close to the steam and it is not advised if you already have very red and sensitive skin. Caution is needed.

Hope you find this helpful.

Can I remove the cleansing milk with a warm sponge?

Thank you for the swapping advice, I will do that.
I have a hand held steamer that I use. Not the best in the world but it is ok.
When I did it today my cheeks we're a little red but I thought it was just cos of the facial that I did? I have combination skin so I thought steaming would be beneficial to me?

I would definitely steam first and then exfoliate. Steam will open up the pores and then let the exfoliant clean all the dirt inside. Close the pores with cold water.
Only asked why you thought you were doing something wrong cos your routine seems fine.
Are you having problems with the skin after?

Cheeks seem a little red but thats kinda normal for me to have red/pinkish cheeks, I dont have it a lot. I have I think its broken capillaries around my nose so now I dont rub like I used to I do it a lot more gently.

Heat dilates the blood vessels which increases the blood flow to the skin, so rosy red cheeks are quite normal. :)

:) all is good then. Thank you

I would cover the broken capillaries on your nose with a damp cotton wool pad if you don't want to give up the steaming all together, but if you are getting broken capillaries then an enzyme or AHA/BHA peel/solution may be a better choice as an exfoliant rather than a scrub and steam.

I recommend exfoliating before steaming. The primary reason for exfoliation is that it removes dead skin cells from the stratum corneum (outer most layer of skin). Whilst it also aids the removal of pore blockages, it in away cleanses the skin's surface of the dead cells, thereby, leaving it smoothed and refined and totally clean!

I can't see the point of steaming over a face which has a layer of dead skin cell yet to be removed?

I agree with weezie about using damp pads to cover any sensitive areas eg. cheeks. If blood capillaries are already dilated or broken, you need to be careful as steaming can make this worse.

So I was right then? :) yay

Well I am going to try and do it at least once a week :)

I also exfoliate first. I just think steaming first is softening the skin and to then exfoliate will surely make the skin sore? xxx

My skin wasn't sore when I did it. I use very fine grains though to exfoliate so it didnt really feel like exfoliating.

Steaming is not used to soften the skin though. It's primary purpose is to help open the pores and this helps with comedone extraction.
