Hi, I am a qualified beauty therapist to nvq3 standard and also have an acrylic nail certificate and have my own business. I am not currently practising the acrylic nails as I dont actually like them but would like to learn gel nail overlays. I have mine done regularly and can see that to just perform the overlay it is a very simple method. I obviously perform manicures and pedicures all the time and would like to start doing gel overlays, without the extension. Do I have to have a gel nail qualification to actually do this or is the qualifications I have enough?? I know that the big brands such as calgel etc offer training with the products but I can access other gel brands through my current salon suppliers. Is there anything saying I would not be allowed to perform this treatment on clients without an actual gel certificate?? Also what gel brands are the best without having to do the hurrendously expensive courses? Thanks

Unfortunately, your insurance probably doesn't differentiate between systems (but may do if you read the small print)

You are not qualified in gels. They are very different from l&p and each brand has it's own characteristics.

An overlay is NOT as simple as it appears! It is a skilled application whether you apply it over a natural nail or a tip. There are all the prep issues, H&S, good consultation and structuring.

If you want to be successful with a gel system you must be trained in the system and the specific brand. There is no easy option and if it means paying for more courses then you must 'bite the bullet' and do it properly from the beginning.

I would also look at why you don't like l&p. Do you have good reasons?

l&p???? Do you mean acrylics?? I dont like them because I have had them quite a lot before and they totally runined my natural nail...where as now I have gel and my nails are never ruined.

L&P DOES NOT DAMAGE THE NATURAL NAIL!!!
I think you'll find a few nail techs here that will get rather annoyed with a statement like that.
If you hit the search button you'll find a lot of threads relating to this myth/debate/misinformation...whatever you want to call it.
If nail techs themselfes are misinformed what hope do we have of educating the general public

L&P/acrylics shouldn't do any more damage than any other system (unless its MMA :))

Most techs have their preferences and converting is easy. Don't be discouraged.

I have had acrylics on numerous occasions and they have ruined my nails, I am allowed my opinion on this and im not saying that all acrylic systems ruin nails but I found that I did not like them and I will not sell something which I dont believe works for me. I like gels and that is what I would ike to do.

I am a qualified gel technician and would say go for it...it really is a gret system to learn...there are many courses and products you could learn, from Calgel which IMO is a tough, durable "soft" gel,Biosculpture,Akzentz options,IBD,and then you have "hard" gels...IMO CND Brisa and Akzentz are the best...i tried so many gels, and bewcause i love colour Calgel won hands down for me.

However, the application i will forwarn you,is not as simplistic as it looks...it took me a while to grasp it,and with some mentoring and education, started to really enjoy it.

There is also a thread, and i can not think for the life of me how to link it,is called ""which is better gel or acrylic nails"...you may also find this enlightening if you type it in on the search engine here:)

I would also like to add that only doing overlays will limit your skills as a nail technician,as there are clients who will want extensions, and you need to cover every eventuality.

Hi, thank you for your response. I was only looking to do the overlays as a friend of mine is just doing that and makes a killing. I have just been reading up on akzentz and looks wuite nice. Its just the initial outlay costs that concern me because I know the calgel courses etc are quite expensive arent they?? So would you recommend Calgel being the best then? Did you do the Calgel course?

I think you get out of what you do for what you put into it....and that is funding, and choosing education and reputation.I am a brand girl,so i love to talk about the products i use and to educate clientele that nails are not infallible!

I also think you have to have a passion for it,and feel in your heart,it is what you want and love to do as well as good business acumen. You have to be masking a profit, after all this will be your livlihood, and only undercutting your prices will attract clients who will trash thier nails and not look after them...maybe i am sticking my head out on a limb saying that but it is what i believe:!:

I just loved the look and feel of calgel, and the customer service is second to none, however i am re;atively new in enhancements, there are many other experienced gel geeks who can also help out.

Quite correctly, you are allowed your own opinions.

But unfortunely your opinions quotes the wrong information. This is a professional website where thousands view around world. The other geeks are only trying to make sure the correct information is read by others.

All L+P systems do not harm the nails. It is who puts it on and how it is put on that determines the condition of the nails. Gel is not any better than L+P. ALL enhanancement products are from the Acrylic family whether it is wraps, gels or L&P.

If you are interested enough to offer nail enhancements as a part of your service, then it may be beneficial for you to learn and have the correct knowledge about what you are using.

If you type in gel in search, you will find plenty of threads discussing about it. Here are the results of a search I have done on your behalf.

Hope that helps.

I'm quite new to nails and I hate it when I hear people say "acrylics ruin your nails" or "but does your gel ruin nails like acrylic". I explain to them it's not the system but the person that causes damage and you if you pick them off.

I've also had my nails ruined by acrylic which I know now was MMA. I've not let this put me off learning L&P which I'll be doing in November. If anything I think it's made me more aware of the damages that heavy filing can do.

They used a drill on me and picked off my old enhancements. I didn't know any better. I certainly do now and that's mostly down to this site.
