Hi everyone!

I just want some opinions on this one ~ a client of mine works for a charity for people that are visually impaired. She asked if I would mind going to the centre where she works for one day every other week and doing manicures, file and polishes, cuticle tidies and maybe even just hand massages.

I really don't know how much to charge! I would love to be able to offer it free of charge but I have got my costs to cover and if I'm offering it on a regular basis then I don't want to start begrudging doing it. AND from their point of view, they probably don't want to feel like charity cases because, as my client said, they want to just feel normal.

What would you all do? xx

yes then charge normal rates but give like a bulk or pamper party discount say cost £20 but if more then 5 pplit will be£15, that sounds reasonable to me.
You are a busines at end of the day!

Hi, not sure if this will help. But someone I know does this kind of thing with the elderly, and with them it can be quiet time consuming. Might be the same for you, so just take that in to account.

Also you may have to move to them, so again picking up your bits and moving to different tables/rooms.

If you dont use them already, use marbles if you soak, great for the sensations.

hope it works out for you.

Thank you. That is what I'm concerned about ~ I'm going to have to have a serious think about this now! That is such a good idea with the marbles, I've never even thought about that before!!!! Thank you ! xx

What Marbles, as in glass balls? or is this a secret product i dont know about?

just wanted to say i think its a great thing your doing:)

It depends what you want out of it I suppose. I have volunteered one day a months at the St Luke's Hospice to help pamper people suffering from cancer and their relatives/carers and I do this for free.

Do you know if they have other therapists/techs who go in? What do they do about charging?

Hi Debs,

I don't think they do have any other therapists that will be gonig in. Its a new thing they're introducing. I think she will be getting a chiropodist in too. That is such a lovely thing for you to do at the hospice. I've often wondered about doing that myself. Do you enjoy doing it? xx

I do this about once a month for a disability centre locally. i charge £20 +vat per hour i do two hours at a time and just offer, nail cutting filing polishing and mini hand and arm massage, usually do about ten in the time allotted and it goes down a treat, hth xxx

Hiya, just normal kids marbles or I suppose those small glass beads that you can put around candles, just something for them to play with whilst their hands are soaking.

That's a really good idea ~ it sounds like exactly what I'm intendding on offering. Do you think charging an hourly rate would be better then than charging for the individual treatments? Does the disability centre pay you or the clients that you do? xx

i'd do an hourly rate and have a set amount of hours so that you can plan other clients around it.

it would be difficult to turn up thinking that you had 4 hours work and only do an hour if you have turned away other clients so that you can go there.

i know its a charity, but you are in business.

thank you angel fingers, thats good advice actually ~ I hadn't really thought of that because I don't really do mobile work (just a few family and friends at home) but still think I should charge an hourly rate because as you say I don't want to turn up thinking I've got 4 hours work and I end up sitting there waiting for them to turn up! So is it the actual centre that pays you and the clients pay them for each treatment? xx

when i have worked for a charity [not nails] the charity itself pays rather than the clients but it may be a different set up where you are.

Thank you. She just asked me to come up with ideas, write them down and give them to her on Thurs when I see her next. She's retiring and handing it over to someone else so I suppose the ball is in my court!! I don't even know where to start though. I'm thinking that them paying me is the best option for me ~ maybe start by only going in for a couple of hours every other week. Then I think if it gets more popular I can up my hours. Thank you for your help, it's good to speak to someone that has already done it xx

hi again, the centre pays me out of their budget and before i stared i told them how many of each treatment i could fit in, i don't do everyone in the two hours, but will do any who missed out on the next visit. I did on my first visit get everyone to sign or give consent for treatment and did a small consultation with each, hth xx

Hi

I currently volunteer my services for FREE at a youth club and I teach the girls basic manicures and basic nail art procedures and provide my own products, my workshops have proven to be a success that I have just been informed that this youth club is looking into funding for me to be paid which is set at £20 per hour, so I think if you charge the same it should pay for all your outgoings.
Good luck,

Thank you Tiptop and Estherlou, definately think the hourly rate is going to work better then. I'll tell her that and go from there xx
