Hi there guys im Casey and im new to all this so forgive me if im a little slow lol. I am strating my nail tech training on march 9th i have been doing a little practicing at home with otc acrylic nail kits and they arnt turning out very good, i know that i am not trained but it has got me thinking maybe im just not a natural? Is this the right career path for me? I am hoping to open up a salon at home once my training is complete and also need ideas for names. Look foward to talking with you all and hearing your opinions :)

hi casey, and welcome.
you'll not know if you're a 'natural' until after you've completed your training, so don't fret (yet). i can't imagine that otc acrylic is at all the same as professional product, so it will give you false results. IMO, you should stop practicing until you've received the proper instruction - that way, you won't get into any bad habits that are hard to break - we all know just how hard bad habits are to break!
so good luck for your course, it's a fabulous skill and career to have.
i work from home and although i sometimes miss the buzz of activity in a salon, i love being the boss of me, if i need time off, i take it!
best of luck, honey, let us know how it goes.

Thanks Debi, thats a very good point about the bad habits! I shall stop and wait for the training, I live in a very small town id certainly love to work in a salon but there just isnt anyone willing to hire here. Plus having a 21 month old and a 8 month old is hard to work around so i guess from home is best.
Nice to meet you :)
Casey

Hi Casey!

Nice to see another New Zealander on here!

Where abouts in NZ are you?

I had a look at the photo in your album, it is not that bad really, I've seen worse from people who have had training. Who do you plan to train with?

Take care

Suze

Welcome to the site.

It is not all about how they look, it is also about how they last. You are not helping yourself at all by 'playing around' with over-the-counter products, which are nothing like good branded professional lines. Try to be patient and wait for it to be explained to you at your training.

Being a natural is not going to be apparent when you haven't even been shown how to!! Once you shown and if you pick it up straight away .. then you'll see if you are natural or if you have to work hard at learning your skill. Either way a person can end up being a great technician.

Welcome to geek land hun.
I remember buying a kit to have a play with...............
What a mess I made of it:lol: Thankfully I'd been having my own nails done by a really great nail geek so I knew straight away that this stuff I was trying to use was NOTHING like the professional products.
I'm a real high school drop out and thought it would be a real trial for me to stick a training course, but right from day one I was hooked, I love doing courses and even though I've had to put my business on the back burner I'll never give it up totally, I get far to much of a buzz when a client looks at the finished result and goes all wide eyed on me.
If you are really itching to do something then may I suggest you buy Gigi's book, 'nailclass' and subscribe to Scratch magazine?
I'm sure other geeks can suggest must have books to go with those two, but they are my favorites :green:
Good luck hun:hug:
