Have had a busy 2 days putting my website together. It's still not finished, need a few more pictures to go on it and some further information. Awaiting a reply from Sweet Squared as to whether I can use CND Logos etc and then I can completely finish. But here it is, thought I would show you and have some feedback on what you think :)

Do you do eye lashes? It's on your price list but not on your side menu and your top thing says you specialize in shellac MINX and tans but no mention of eye lash?

I like the site, but wasn't able to read any details as I found it difficult with small white writing on a black background. Also, is it just you, as you say 'contact us' on the contact page.
Other than that, I like the site and think it will look great once all the images have been added. People buy with their eyes at the end of the day-they like piccies.
x

On your about you section you talk about when you qualified and then you fell pregnant and cared for your daughter .
I know this makes you more human to clients and is important personaly to you but I don't think the clients need to know that ,
More you have Been qualified science 2005
And have since trained in blah blah

The side bar make the font bigger / bolder

And maybe call slide show a gallery

I agree about the personal info, really wouldn't bother including that. Also you may find that some potential clients may be put off by a child possibly being in the house. I once had a back massage at a home salon and half way through she left the room to sort out her THREE year old son !!!! She'd just left him in his play room whilst she did my treatment :eek

I couldn't find any opening hours or details about parking. I would also add some information about arriving X amount of time before treatment. You don't want a client banging on the door 15mins early whilst your still with a previous client.

Thank you for your comments. Like I said above and on the home page of my site, the site is still under construction and not finished yet, so images etc are yet to be added and more information to be given on each service I am providing.

Yes I am doing eye treatments. They are not mentioned in the header as it says "specialising" in and then list the 3 main things that I want to really push as my top services and are the services I "specialise" in. I am going to be adding to what I offer over time and obviously can't list everything in the header, those 3 services are the ones I want to really stand out, hence putting them in the header.

There are elements of the site that I can't change and is just how the design of it is. I cannot change the font or size of the titles in the side bars and also can't change the name of them.

White writing on the black I personally think is the best option, no other colour will stand out on black and will be even more difficult to read, I have already tried several different colour options.

And as for the personal information about myself, I will have a think about that one. At the end of the day, that is what I'm like and I am promoting a beauty room that is relaxed, welcoming and a home from home environment, I think people having a little snippet of me being "human" is nice and I would like that if I was looking for somewhere to go myself. Majority of feedback I've had whilst I was looking into doing this, was that, like me, most people don't like going to salons as they feel intimidated and they would much prefer coming to someone's house or purpose built room so they felt more at home and welcomed. There will be a note added on the homepage to say that children won't be able to come into the salon (politely as I can) so people will know from that, that it is unlikely my 4 year old SON will be running around.
I do appreciate your feedback, that's why I decided to post it here but hindsgight is a wonderful thing and have now gone from feeling really proud of myself and happy about what I've done so far to feeling a bit saddened that primarily only negative feedback has been given. There's constructive and not so.....

Ignore them all!!!! : ) I think for your 1st attempt it's fab... I did the exactly the same, posted my new website all proud and got nothing but negative comments !! Plenty of people have viewed my website and I've had new clients from it so I'm happy!! X I think as long as your stating your treatments, prices and photos who cares about the rest !!!!! That's all your clients will be looking at ! Have a look at my website it's still new and similar to yours to be honestx www.nailzbeautiquebyemily.co.uk
I also White writing on black and I love it !!!!! I really don't think customers will be looking saying ooooh that doesn't look right xx
MASSIVE well done from me xxxxx

Ps is it through vista?? I'm guessing it is and like u said before it's very limited as to what you can change ie font size etc x will people be phoning you to arrange an appointment? As then u can say at what time they should arrive etc as I really don't think people sit and read through that but I might be wrong x

Sorry but it's replies like this that completely baffle me. Ignore them all ??? Does that mean if you don't like the constructive criticism your not interested.

I suggest that if people only want comments like ooooh it's lovely and well done then perhaps add a line at the bottom of posting requesting nothing 'negative' is posted or don't ask for critique.

Thank you  Yours looks beautiful, love the design xx
Friends and family have all been really positive about it, thought I'd put it here to get feedback from other professionals too as let's face it, friends and family can be biased. I'm all up for criticism when it's helpful and constructive, don't get me wrong, but I think there's nice ways to put things without coming straight in with, this is wrong, that doesn't look good, this and that should be different. Whilst I'm professional I do still have feelings and a "It looks great but can I make some suggestions" might have been a nicer way to say about it.

Seriously? Have another read through those initial posts. There isn't one out right negative comment on there. MissPink in particular was very encouraging, mizzy_dizzy said she knew why you'd put info but would suggest x, Bombini gave you the benefit of a personal experience to illustrate and back up her suggestions re: personal info and something that would benefit you re: arrival time.

So, with hindsight and another read through - were they really so negative???

*yawn*
Another post turned sour...

I am old enough and ugly enough to deal with criticism but I also am a person that takes people's feeling into consideration and I personally, would word things as nicely as I could like I said above. I don't think there's any need for rudeness, yes, I posted here to get opinions but at the same time, when it's taken someone so long to do it and the title has a big cheesy grin, it would suggest they're feeling quite proud of it, so it might have been nice to have had some remark on how nice it looked before you haven't said this that and the other. But that's just me.

So, with hindsight and another read through - were they really so negative???

Again, I have taken on board the comments made and thanked the posters for their comments. I have also replied to them stating why the things that have been mentioned are the way they are and pointed out again, despite saying it in my opening comment and on my homepage, that the site is NOT completed. But, we all know that on forums no tone can be heard and the written word can be interpreted differently by each person. When someone has spent hours and days in fact on something, it might be nice to say things a little differently?? I know this is a professional site but does that mean that people can't be friendly to one another? I don't expect only "Oooh it's lovely" comments but the tone of some of the posts, is coming across "to me" as negative. We all read things differently.
Also, I have always been taught that when giving criticism, you should open with a positive, state the negatives and finish with a positive. It makes people feel less defensive :wink2:

All points taken on board. Thank you xx

I think your site looks great hun, everything is clear and easily accessible and I love the simplicity of the white on black, very classic xx

Im sorry , didn't realize the only critique you wanted was a sugar coated one!

I'm dyslexic so I ever over explain and give examples of everything or i get straight to the point , if that comes across as rude well that is not how it's intended.

Yes your proud of your work no one said it's s$&t or horrid , at the same time what good is saying how pretty it is if it's not fully functioning as an easy to read useable easy accesses site?

As your peers who have tried and errored our selfs we wear offering you the benefit of our experience !

we just gave you a few pointers , to making it better !
Sure you can do with them as you will
But please remember even grate authors and writers still have editors to correct and alter ! Even on there greatest works!
NO ONE IS PERFECT ! :D

If you read my replies above I have said that I of course don't want sugar coated, as you put it, replies. I have thanked you and others for your comments and I have said that the comments have been taken on board, am merely explaining that from my POV, sometimes things can be put ever so slightly less abruptly. Like I said, critique is best given in the form of positive, negative then finishing with positive. It is polite and gets your point across without the person you are directing it at feeling deflated or defensive and is IMO how critique should be delivered.
Oh and whilst I DO appreciate constructive criticism, I think my site is far from unreadable or confusing or inaccessible, it's functionality will be fine when it's finished, I shall say it again, it is under construction! And I never once said I was perfect, I'm far from it.

Wow looks fantastic! Well done to you too. Am hoping mine will look as good as that once I have some more images to add. I too thought I just needed "something" out there as I've been asked by a few people now if I have a site and getting enquiries about what I'll be doing and when I'll be opening. Love that template :wink2: :D xx
