A good friend of mine has her nails done in l&p religiously once a fortnight by your's truly. She loves having enhancements, swears she follows all my aftercare advice, uses her oil and has always let me practise on her with rapt fascination. She isn't a picker and the other nails are fine. She's a regular and frequent swimmer, so that's one theory, but it's rather counterbalanced by the fact that the others all stay put.

Now, she has this one pesky nail that gives up the ghost from around 7 - 10 days on average. It just comes off, clean as a whistle. What is wrong? I prep it the same as all the others and they stay on fine. It doesn't happen to anyone else, either, so what's up with the little blighter? :grr:

Is this a rebellious nail that just doesn't like it's acrylic mantle or am I doing something wrong? I've had it suggested to me that it's my prep, but I'm at a loss. I can almost guarantee it's going to happen every time and so I'm super careful about how I prepare this digit! :irked:

Any advice or suggestions, please?

is it her dominant hand forefinger????

It's the middle finger of her dominant hand.

what does she do for a living or hobbie??
i would look at this

She's a full time housewife/carer for her disabled husband and enoys swimming and gardening. I tell her about wearing gloves for gardening and washing up, but maybe I should extend this advice to when she's swimming?

randomly this happened with one of my regular nail clients!
after a couple of sets it stopped happening........

Think about it! this is the finger that sticks out the furthest, so it's the first one to take a bashing! Gloves do NOT protect the nails from breakages, only from the dirt and grime. Clients often get less careful when wearing gloves, so she needs to start being more careful! If it's one nail and it is EVERY time then it is down to her! However, the more it comes off the more damage she is doing, the nail gets weak, and thus makes it a less stable platform to build on. Thus making it less strong in the first place ... it's a vicious circle and you need to tell her that you've done your bit, now it's her turn to do her bit and look after them!

I used to have a client that happened to. Nearly every single time and for ages we couldn't figure out what was different with that one finger.
Then she came in one appointment and said she knew what was different. She wore a rubber stop on that finger to help flick pages while she was working. She'd always done it, and it was such a matter of routine that she didn't even think about it.

I too have a client that her fore finger on her dominant hand either breaks or becomes mis-shaped. we discovered that at work she taps 1 button of the key board all day and yes with this finger. I would say it is definately something that she is doing you just need to figure out what!

Gee, thanks guys! :) When it first started happening, she said it came off when she was doing one of her manoeuvres with her husband's hoisting equipment and really banged it to the point of 'Ouch!.' It's possible that it's gradually weakening the nail and she's just got used to the fact that she does this? :irked:

I really couldn't see that it was my prep or application, or it would happen to at least some of the others and it doesn't. It 'Has' to be her lifestyle and so I'm going to grill her this time about it. Why do we always tend to blame ourselves? :grr:

She has arthritis in her finger joints, it looks a bit unsightly and so she loves having short enhancments as they seriously improve the overall appearance of her hands. She also says she finds a treatment very relaxing and a real break from her labours, so we'll keep going. :)

Is there anything I can do, apart from talking to her about it, to help her keep the offender on?
