With the end of another academic year looming, I would really like to take on a young person as a nail junior (like a hair junior). Does anybody know if there is an official apprenticeship scheme for nail technicians / beauty therapists, where they could do a day release once a week?

Or would I have to make up my own and pay for them to go for private training?

I was going to pm Mum with this, but thought this subject may be of interest to other salon owners, or that they already have such a scheme going and could share their experiences.

hiya Sassy, i have tried this route, as far as i am aware there isn't an apprenticeship for nails, only beauty therapy/beauty specialist. your best bet is to get hold of the apprenticeship board. sorry don't have their number or web address... maybe you could do a google search. hth

Hi sarah

You'll be pleased to know there is a Modern Apprenticeship for just nails!!! (This is the Level 2). An Advanved Modern Apprenticeship (Level 3 will shortly follow) (I know cos I was involved in a workshop and then wrote the 'course outlines' for the delivery part of it.

I'm not sure how readily available it is yet as it needs the Awarding Bodies to take it up and then colleges to offer it.

It's actually a great system if used properly. Check out the HABIA website and there will prob be some details on there. If not ther're coming. You could call them to see which AW has got approval to offer them and then call that organisation to find out who is offering it.

Good luck

thanks for that mum, now i can tell the bloke from the apprenticeship board who came to see me that i was right!! snotty young upstart that he was!! just love it when they send these uptight young blokes with a point to prove into a "beauty" environment and they don't know a leg wax from a pedicure!!!

It may be worthwhile getting in touch with your local jobcentre as they like to place young people in work experience situations. Just before I left one of the salons I worked in she had a young girl in and she didn`t have to pay her cos she was paid by the training centre she was signing on at.
I don`t know any other details but it may be worth checking out

Thank you for all your replies. I'll certainly get in touch with the relevant people Marian and report back to let you know how, and if, it works!

Dianne these snotty know it alls get my pip, just like my YellowPages rep!!

Debs I hadn't thought of that, maybe worth looking into, but I'd be worried that I'd be sent someone who had no interest whatsoever and would be detrimental to the business, or are you able to interview the people yourself before taking them on?

They only send people that want to learn the trade so to speak and yes, you do interview them.
I`m not sure if the girl was from the jobcentre as such but she was from some training/jobcentre sort of place and I know she was being paid to work with us.
All the relevant checks were done on the salon too, including a health & safety officer coming around to check out salon too.
Its a fab idea if you can find the source as you get a trainee you can train and you don`t have to pay them either.
Let me know how you get on!

Thanks Debs, looks like I've got a lot of researching to do, I'll let you know how i get on - may be a few weeks cos I have so much other stuff to do too!
