Hello Everybody

I have been toying with the idea of using nail art canes, I have purchased several different canes and I have managed to slice them fine, the problem I am having is that when I come to embed them in the gel system I use they have no flexibility in them an crack. I am finding this really frustrating.

Is there anyone out there who cangive me a couple of pointers?
Thanks guys, you are are all stars x

If it's the cane slices that crack, then I would say you sliced them a bit to thick.

I just got some today, and heated them a bit before slicing very thin. If sliced thin enough, they kinda slices of a bit rounded and fit on the nail.

I heated them in a small bean bag (don't know if it's the name, it's a bag with some kind of wheat ore something in it, to put in microwave and heat)

I have thought about when encasing them in gels, you could do a layer of gel, wipe sticky layer of, buff and then glue canes on, then encase the whole thing, to prevent bumps in the nail.

HTH:hug:

Thanks for that advice, I will try to get them abit thinner, they are roughly just over 1mm thick I think thats the right thickness?

I didnt put them in the oven as they seemed to slice well without me doing that, but I am willing to try anything.

I will let you know how I get on x

I make them a lot less than 1 mm. Just so thin you can make them will be fine:green:

i've only put my canes in l&p but i sliced them paper thin and they will curve to the shape of the nail and not crack x

Thanks peeps,

Any advice is very much appreciated. I will try to get them thinner than 1mm, god I hope I don't slice my fingers!!!! The blades are so sharp.

Failing that, are they available to buy ready sliced? cheating I know but better than not being able to put any nails on at all from sore finger tips!!

xx

Hi, you can buy them ready sliced, but the majority are to thick, then you have to spend ages filing/slicing them down more! xx

OK I guess i'll just have to go REALLY careful then lol, thanks guys you really are very helpful, I love this site x

They are definitely tricky to work with, I have mine in now and I love the look.

I always warm them up before I use them - you can put them in the palm of your hand to warm them up, or under your table lamp. Once they are warmed I gently bend them. If they are too thick, I place them between two files and file them thinner.

When I put them in gels, I first do as very thin layer of gel. BEFORE curing I place the canes so they have a really sticky surface to cling to. Then I cure for 7 seconds (Integrity Gel cures for 7 seconds between layers) and then do a second thicker layer of gel.

It works great! They are definitely tricky though, but so worth it when they are done.

Thanks Mely-Bely I'll give it a shot, I really want to work with canes so I'm hoping I can pull it off. I'm sure with plenty of practice I shall master it x

Una you are my nail art cane guru, thankyou so much.
I am going to have a go later on this evening when the kiddies are in bed and I have enough peace and quiet so I can concentrate xxx

You are very welcome! I am sure you will do fine - and they are so much fun when finished! I find it a lot more difficult with l&p because you must work quickly before it cures - with gel there isn't any of that pressure!

Good luck and have fun!

Hello hun!
It also depends what kind of canes you have. If the canes are not enough baked they are hard and fragile. Even if you slice them the slices will break when applied to the nail.
The ready baked cane should bend nicely even without warming up.
Here is a video about slicing the canes. I do it this way and so far it has been the best...

Hope it helped:hug:

I warm my canes in the toast owen before slicing them . This is a great video for embedding canes if you didn't see it ... I can put the largest canes that way ---:)

Thankyou,

I got my canes from www.dollshouseminiatures.co.uk.
I'm not sure what you mean by ready baked? Does that mean I put them in the oven/ For how long and at what temp?

Sorry for all the qusetions, just really not sure what i'm doing with them?

You heat them for 10 - 20 seconds , then they are softer and readdy to easie slice . They shouldn't be very hot when you touch them , just a bit warm .

Thanks, I will give it a go x

once sliced and still warm i bend them alittle round my gel brush so slightly curved as no ones nails are dead flat!

god! never do what i did first and hold the blade the wrong way and try and slice! ouch! one deep cut on my index finger for a week!!!!!!!
