Why do clients tell you that their nails just 'fell off'??? It drives me nuts. 'One minute the nail was there the next minute it was hanging off I think the glue came away'! I wish they would just be honest and say they caught it on something as it makes no sense for it to happen if they haven't been a bit hashy with them!!! Just thought I'd vent my frustration!! :irked:

Hey Glitter do a search... i have vented mine too!:!::!:

Truism No 1 .... clients never take responsibility for what happens to their nails.

Truism No 2 .... clients never take responsibility because they want you to feel guilty so that they can try and get a freebie!!

Truism No 3 .... If you understand your product chemistry and consider yourself a good technician then you will not let them take advantage of you; to do so is admitting that you think you did something wrong!

Truism No 5 .... Because the nail industry is for the most part made up of women who are not business women and who seem to lack confidence in their work OR think their clients will like them more if they give them freebies - clients keep taking advantage because YOU let them!

Truism No 6 .... Never give a freebie unless you KNOW you are in the wrong; otherwise never.

sooooo true !

I used to be sooo unconfident I would actually say to clients before they left "if any break or lift, just call me and I will sort them for you"

I might aswell have said
"feel free to treat your nails as you wish, break them bite at them do whatever, because I am such a mug, I am offering to fix them for free ! "

People funnily enough had plenty of breakages, once I stopped and started believing in myself a bit more,
the breakages stopped !!!!

Im not saying this is what you have been doing, but I bet there are plenty of people out there that do !

Some just don't like admitting they've done wrong!

In the past when i've had a few certain clients come back, saying that they 'fell off', I have shaken my hand in the air and said 'Look, mine are not falling off'!

I usually use myself to get them to confess....
I may say
"ooo really, thats very unusual, well y'know the products are designed to bond..and see here, there is a little bit of nail damage, well mine was like that once, but I was a bit naughty and bit mine off without realising it (or caught it on car door etc..) "
Im never patronising about it, just tell it like it is ...I really have bitten my nails off I am no saint, I learned my lesson the hard way.
I don't want them to do the same as there may really damage their nails

Even if they don't tell you there and then that they "helped the nail along"
They know that you don't take no bull for next time,

I once had a client who bit every set off instead of having a soak off....in her oppinion, quicker and cheaper,
She said to me "it doesnt matter, you can just shove more on"
I was like " er.....well eventually your nails will be too damaged so NO I won't be able to"
She was shocked ...

Tell me about it! I had a regular in today who claimed that two of her nails had just "fallen off" the day after her last infills! Yet the the nails showed sure signs of damage where the nail must have been knocked off with some force! when will they realise we are not stupid, and that we can tell from the state of the nail that it hasn't just "fallen off"?!?!?!

(ah i feel abit better after that )

I think we all have clients like that... I have one lady who's nails just "falloff".. with layers of nail plate an dwhite flake's everywhere... yeah right.... I tell them that if they just fell off... there would not be damage to the nail plate like there is....
My best one kept telling me that the all lifted ... funny thing was that the zone 3 was still 100 % attached ...grrrrrr... she was trying to get a full set at the price rebalance... i said "oh no problem, i have time for a full set but it will be $$"..... "Oh but i only bought $$ with me... ".. I told her the ATM was next door and while she popped in i would start setting up and would she like a cup of tea when she got back....
She never did it again...

Thats what I do say to them and from now on I'll stop it! I'm so glad everyone else has these problems and it's not just me! I will be sure to explain to them that they can't just 'fall off' when they come in for their repairs!

we as nail techs also need to look at what we are also doing wrong. Before becoming a nail tech my nails would break constantly. I was told that I had oily nail beds so get used to it. That is how I began my interest in nails 8yrs ago. Now I know that I do not have this problem I know it was the technicians. Even now sometimes my clients nails do just pop. The nail underneath flexes away from the product causing an air bubble which can creep up to the free edge (esspecially when product is old). And if half the nail broke off and they removed the rest of the product can you blame them? it was broken already. Im not tryin to stick up for snooty clients but honestly if youve put a nail on properly it would hurt to just bite it off for no reason. Especially if its more than 1 person coming in with this problem.whom you can tell pulled it off and usualy does this regulary (you cant pop just one and stop) so sometimes instead of jumpoing down clients throat look at ALL possible reasons and ask some questions. I alway quiz my clients when they break to find out real reason :)

Of course this is very true. You have to look at your level of experience and expertise and be honest about it. This is why I included this Truism No 3 ...

But if this problem is something you are seeing habitually then you do have to look to yourself and your technique and make some changes.

I understand that but it is not happening to all clients. Most of my clients have their nails on for weeks without a problem. I am not accusing the clients of 'biting off the nail' or 'jumping down their throats' for that matter. All I am saying is that its perfectly possible for them to catch the nail on something or be to harsh with them and break one accidently. My problem is that very rarely do they admit to this, instead saying it just 'fell off'.
