Hi everyone

I'm in a dilemma.. With registration for school in about a month I am totally stumped as with what to do.

I am really interested in the esthetician course and the nail tech course equally.

The esthetician class is in Texas and is 750 hours and includes the study of skincare, facials, makeup application, waxing, microdermabrasion, and chemical peel.

The nail tech class is 600 hours and includes tips, overlays, wraps, and sculptured nails....

Ok with that being said I am really just worried about finding a job once finished with school. I will be trying to seek out work in a fairly smaller town around 40,000 were there are alot of salons, one medical spa, one permant makeup type place, and a ton of nail salons.... although I have 2 larger cities 100,000 + (shreveport LA, and alexandria La) about an hour away from me in either direction. Ok.

I have also went out and asked individuals in the beauty industry and have had mixed reviews in which has confused me even further. I am 30 years old and I am sick of working minimum wage jobs where my co workers are like 16 years old, I am beginning to feel like a loser honestly. I have always loved fashion and beauty and I have more clothes and makeup then the law should allow, and I think either of these professions would be right up my ally. It just really comes down to money and finding a job.

What are the pros and cons and the reality of the the skin care and nail tech world? (I will also be listing this thread in the skin geek forum to hear the different opinions)

Also another important issue has come up is the school I will be attending in the process of seeking accredidation (they recently moved?!?) will this factor in if they don't get the accredidation there seeking?(Texas career Institute, in silsbee Tx)

Also I will be getting my license in Tx but live in Louisiana, is it hard to transfer your license over? If you were me what would you do? I'm so confused.... ahhh ok enough of me blabbing. I want to thank you ladies for reading this and taking the time to resond...

Wow, I will try my best!
Hi everyone

I am really interested in the esthetician course and the nail tech course equally. From my personal experience, offering nail services exposes you to a broader range of people, who would be interested in skincare services. So unless its possible to do the two courses at the same time, I would do nails first, then skin.

The esthetician class is in Texas and is 750 hours and includes the study of skincare, facials, makeup application, waxing, microdermabrasion, and chemical peel.

The nail tech class is 600 hours and includes tips, overlays, wraps, and sculptured nails....

Ok. I think if you can get through an interview and present yourself, you should be able to get your foot in the door. One good thing about the beauty industry, is in the US its mostly operating on a commission pay. So it doesn't cost the salon anything for you to "hang out" and try to build a clientele. They only pay you if you do a service and bring money to them.

I have also went out and asked individuals in the beauty industry and have had mixed reviews in which has confused me even further. I am 30 years old and I am sick of working minimum wage jobs where my co workers are like 16 years old, I am beginning to feel like a loser honestly. What are the pros and cons and the reality of the the skin care and nail tech world? (I will also be listing this thread in the skin geek forum to hear the different opinions) Ok here is a challenge. While the commission pay has great oppertunities, it also takes patience and a determination to build a clientele. Alot of people don't make it because they underestimate how much effort and consistency is required. You'll have slow days in the beginning. Everyone has to pay their dues.

Also another important issue has come up is the school I will be attending in the process of seeking accredidation (they recently moved?!?) will this factor in if they don't get the accredidation there seeking?(Texas career Institute, in silsbee Tx) This is essential!! An accredited school means their course is approved by the state and qualifies you to take the theory and practical exams to get your license. If they have moved, they are probably waiting for an inspection of the new location, but definately stay on top of that one!

Also I will be getting my license in Tx but live in Louisiana, is it hard to transfer your license over? If you were me what would you do? I'm so confused.... ahhh ok enough of me blabbing. I want to thank you ladies for reading this and taking the time to resond... To make you eligible to take the Louisiana state board exam, the hours of the course you are taking in Texas must equal or exceed the requirements in Louisiana. The hours you stated sound like alot, and I think they would satisfy any other states requirements. But to be sure check the dept of professional regulation for LA

Whew!!!!! Good luck!

Hi - I see that you live in the USA. You licensing system is so different to what happens herein the UK where we do a course, get a job and get insurance. . What does your gut tell you to do?? I get the impression that there are loads of nail techs out there. American women are so much more conscious about their nails - same with teeth!!

Would an esthetician course give you more career choices? i would have thought that manicure and nails would be part of the course anyway.
