Hello
I really want to start offering a hair extension service but i am not a trained hair dresser. Could this be a problem?
Can anyone recommend a good hair extension course?
Xxxx

I don't think you will find any reputable company that will train you with no background of hair, when training to be a hairdresser you learn how the hair is made up etc and how to cut, there is no way of you been able to finish the extensions if you can't cut.

Hair extensions are a specialist service that require, patience and education. When you do a full head or even half head of extensions you need to be able to ''blend' the real hair in with the extensions through cutting so it would be impossible for you to achieve great results with just fitting alone. You can go on a course just for extensions but I don’t think it would be beneficial at all. There are lots of complications like nape whorls, cow licks, double crowns etc. that all effect the way is fitted, and the only way to know about these contraindications is to become a hairdresser. If I was you I would go and get your qualifications as a hairdresser first and then you can branch out, but you need a solid understanding of hair first, education is the key in this industry. :D Hope I haven’t sounded too negative.

^^ everything BBH salon said. What just about to type a mini essay & then insaw this aha! X

I am a beauty therapist by trade, no hair training at all. I looked into loads of companies to do extensions- most will train you without being a hairdresser. I went with KM hair Extension Training, they were absolutely excellent. Since then I've packed in beauty and run a hair extension business and I'm unbelievably busy with it x

I fully agree!x

I fully agree!x

Me too, if I had extensions put in I would no way have them fitted by some1 who wasn't qualified in hair. I'm also sorry if it sounds negative. Xoxo

I had hair extensions fitted in last year by a non hairdresser, my hair was not blended in and it looked awful. I had a bob and you could see where the extensions were started and where my real hair stopped so it looked like a mullet type do. I would never have someone do my hair that is not a hairdresser even if they are trained in extensions now x

I think it highly depends on your training. I got taught blending, layering, feathering and blunt cutting in my training. A lot of my clients get extensions in a bob hair style, and they are all blended perfectly well and you wouldn't be able to tell they were hair extensions. (Bias of my own work I know)
I think its completely plausable to train without being a hair proffessional, and like I say, I'm a very popular extensionist and all that comes from people seeing my work and word of mouth....I would however go on to do a hair cutting course to further my skills, though I don't feel this is necessary as long as your training is good enough x

The thing is with these 1 day training courses is that you can't learn how to cut in one day. When your qualified in hairdressing you have trained for 2-3 years on how to cut hair so you have enough experience. Personally I don't feel 1 day is enough for all the things you have to learn to do extensions. That's just my opinion tho x

Lush us uk you need no experience and you get so much information it's an amazing course! Do it with lush us!

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:Am pretty sure I could learn all about dentistry in one day, I just need the right course.....

Love that comment, so true. My sister is a dental nurse and hates that so many people can offer teeth whitening.

On another note Persianista what do you think of extensions when pregnant? See recent thread. I would love to hear your opinion as you are definitely one of the best on here with advice. I love reading your posts xx

I do agree to an extent I trained as a non-hair dresser and no matter how much I was told I still feel I have so much to learn so I'm now considering going back to college to learn everything else. I think everyone is also entitled to their own personal opinion.

Im sorry If this comes accross as negative but this really BUGS me. Hairdressing - including extensions - is specialised and professional work. I really dont aggree that non hairdressers should carry out this work. Nor do I aggree that places should train non hairdressers. How can you overcome problems, advise the client, or diagnose contra-indications without the relevant hairdressing qualification, Let alone finish it correctly?!
Sorry. Contraversial I know. Just my honest opinion.

Are you also doing the become a brain surgeon in 4 easy steps course too? ;)

I have been hairdressing for over 30 years. I recently went on a hair extension course and was shocked to find non hairdressers training alongside me. I did tell the trainers that I thought it dangerous to let non proffesionals loose on the unknowing puplic. I suggested that they run cutting courses in conjunction with the extension training.
I went and attended another more thorough course as I THINK ONE DAYS TRAINING IS NOT ENOUGH. What happens when a clients hair needs to colour be matched?

I agree with this completely! X

Lush us uk do teach contra-indications and cutting and blending etc. so take it up with lush us and the other training academies. Like I said I think hair dressing experience should be needed hence why I would want to go back to college as I don't know everything I would like to know.

All good hair extensions trainers will cover everything. From contra indications to cutting & blending. But what I think most people are trying to say is that you can't fully understand and take in all the information in less than 24 hours x
