I will be finishing my Beauty course in 3 months. I did this course hoping to set up my own business at the end of it. I was thinking of working home based for a while buliding up clients etc then setting up a salon. Does anyone think it would be a bad idea to do this being newly qualified? Any comments with be helpful! :)

It can be done, but I think you would be better getting some salon experience. It's good to have colleagues to help you out when your new to the industry, you can pick up tips and make you a lot more confident.

Maybe consider the fact that you could get yourself a bit of clientele, before you venture out on your own, making it a lot easier for you in.

This is just my opinion though. I personally couldn't have set up on my own, without the experience I had working in salons.

hey i havent long qualified either. I am doing mobile at the moment , i would do mine from home although i havent got my own house. it is def a good idea before you jump in at the deep end. I am doing a 3 day business course and just did my first day and i am glad i havent gone straight in as there is so much to think about.
:)

Definitely get some salon experience first. Although qualifications are important there's nothing like hands on experience. Also you'll learn from the other therapists you'll be working with.

I have to agree here. Salon experience in a good salon is worth an awful lot. It will introduce you to different ranges, you'll get further hands-on education & training, and you'll have the chance to see how & how not to run a business. To be honest it's only once you qualify that you actually start learning how treatments are carried out!

By the time I came to set up my first business I had quite a few years of salon experience behind me, which made the whole thing a lot easier, but more importantly it gave me confidence.

Hi Passionate,

You didn't mention whether you had any experience other than the course, your ambition is to be admired though perhaps your best option is to go mobile for the time being if possible and saving a little nest-egg to put into the business rather than getting immersed in loans just as you leave college. Either way best wishes in whatever you decide to do.

How old are you?
I set up my own salon having trained years ago, and have never worked in a salon in my life!
I based my salon on my life experience. I've been to enough salons over the years to know what I liked and disliked about them, and I put that knowledge into my own.
I think if you're very young and haven't had a lot of experience of life in general then yes, going to work in a salon is eminently sensible!
