Hi girls,
I have a question about filing,

Some of my clients ( mother included) are so over sensitive to the slightest gentle filing.. they are painful to work on. They all want white tips but as soon as i file or drill they pull away.. I can't understand it.. I also have picked up with other clients that when they are due for their monthly period they feel the heat of the drill but then the other times they don;t feel it at all.... but these are much older ladies and are like this all the time. My mum took her nails off becuase of this.
I will try her with the new soak off gel as there will be no buffing involved..
Can anyone suggest what to do,.. I am so gentle it takes me over an hour and half to rebalance

Could it be down to your technique?
If it is that i would say to never stay to long on the same place and keep your drill moving all the time. Incase you have lifting and want to cut the lifting away just hold your drill slightly tilted so you use less of the bits surface which gives less fricition.
Work light handed but with a good control and keep that drill moving all the time.

I only use it to shorten nails, rebalance the stress zone and if there is lifting to remove it. before i used sanding bands but switched to a golden barrel which is metal. To remove bulk i think that the golden barrel is better since it takes material away faster so you don,t have the tendency to push or go over a spot to much. BUT you have to be very carefull and be very confident in your technique before using it since the edge is razor sharp.

Have you had any training with a drill?

BTW There is still buffing involved with soak off gels.

Manual or electric filing should never hurt.

Are you using an electric file directly on the natural nail or on product only? E files should only be used on product and never on the natural nail.

What RPMs are you using when operating your electric file? If filing at too high a speed or pressing too hard, this will cause friction burn. Also what grit file bit are you using on your e file?

Are you holding the e file in one position for too long as opposed to keeping it constantly moving as this will also cause friction burn?

Have these nails been previously overfiled and are hence extremely thin sensitive now?

Women can feel more sensistive around their monthly period although filing should never hurt anyone. The elderlies nails can be softer an more pliable but great care needs to be taken when working on their nails.

Manual filing can be just as harsh as e filing if done too vigorously. Have you had training in the operation and use of an e file?

You have probably asked yourself these questions, but if not, HTH.

Lol, we must have been posting at the same time.

Thanks for the replies.. I should have been more specific...
I NEVER use the efile/ drill on nails other than to drill out smile lines.. and never go deep enough to get to the natural nail.

Yes I have been trained to use a drill.

These clients of mine ( mother included) can't even stand a snow block!
It is just crazy.

I only use minimal grit files as 9 out of 10 clients don;t have lifting...
It just doesn't make sense to me why they are so sensitive,

Yes I know that there will still be a little buffing with the soak off gels but not as much as the L and P that mum had on before.

Any more idea's...

Am i right in holding the file flat to the nail plate?...

Yep I read those today..other than get a grip.... been on here all bloody day!..
I did the drill training as part of my Cert II..... To be honest it was just touched on to do the smile line.... that is why i would NEVER attempt to do it on the actual nail...
The college pasted the whole class... more than 80% were so bad they should not have got their cert II.... but they paid!

We did the same, that's why I wont use a drill. I have wondered lately if I might if I could find some good training with them.

I was lucky enough to be able to watch and learn from a tech with 10 years exp... of course she was like a whirl wind with it but she showed me a little... she uses it for just about everything... but like a said I just use it for the smiles.... How do you do your smiles?...

Some people are a little sensitive, but it is rare! However I find family members the worst to work on, constant moaning and fidgeting, so maybe your mum is being a bit OTT? But if you are getting this with a lot of people it does seem odd, especially with a snow block. Maybe they are all having you on!!!

Tell them if you can´t file then they can´t have their nails done ... I´ve done this before and funnily enough their sensitivities disappeared. Often it´s just the thought of it ... I know when I had a plaster cast taken off my foot I was sat there so tense and really really nervous, when the technician actually put the drill on my skin and proved that it wouldn´t hurt me I totally relaxed - maybe this is what your clients are doing in a similar way?

Yes you are right to hold the file flat to the nail so that you don´t etch grooves into th surface.

Yeah You know i think you are right..... when i used to have my nails done years ago i would tell her it was hot before it was cause i knew how rough she was..... but honest i am soooo gentle.. I have people tell me this every day... " i come to you cause i always leave cut free and with happy fingers"..... Mum is a pain in the arse!..lol
It is not with alot of people... just 2 older ladies in their 50's.. maybe it is menopause....who knows

I do everythig with hand filing. I bought a drill when I was first qualified, but I don't really think it helps unless you have fab training to go with it.

Some people just don't like having a file anywhere near them. My Mum's like that. She can't stand the feel of having her nails filed at all. Maybe your clients are similar.

Also, just the noise of the file can make some people freak out.

Sometimes if they've had a bad experience elsewhere then you'll be working with someone who expects that it'll hurt and even before you get your file near them they're trying to pull their hand away.

The human brain is a funny thing. If they think it's going to hurt, then it will because they believe it.

Ultimatum time - no file, no nails. They'll learn to toughen up in a hurry and their sensitivity will disappear overnight.

Yeah I guess you are right... One of my clients did have a few bad tech in her time.. she said after 3 fills she knows that she can finally relax and enjoy getting her nails done.

right on the money girl
when you have your monthly period more blood is circulating so they more sensitive, change to zebra or use nsi black 180 grit file, DO NOT HACK away its easy filing minimal if needed, drills bugger up nails if you sculpt properly there no need touch drill or even file the sides you need only buff the top layer smooth.
Pull the sided of nail finger down so no skin showing when you file also make sure you file not sharp you can cut someone easily.

I have'nt had any complaints about my filing since my early days, however I do have one client that wince's as soon as I get the cuticle pusher out of my tray! She looks like she is about to run out the door when I get the file out! I have never cut or hurt her in any way and when I asked why she is so nervous she just says she hates the feeling of the pusher and the file because she knows how sensitive her skin is but it does'nt hurt, its just the anticipation of it! Theres not really a lot I can do about that except be extra gentle and reassuring but I dread her visits, she actually makes me jump sometimes when she flinches and thats before I have even touched her nails with any tool! I think she is just a drama Queen to be honest. :)
