Hi Peeps,

I am in the process of getting started on a return to the Beauty Industry specialising in Natural Nail treatments.

Well, up untill this afternoon I thought I was set on going down the CND/Shellac route...........untill I had to see a different technician in a new salon for my own nails and I decided to give Bio Sculpture a go ( well you gotta sample the alternatives) and I LOVE IT!!!!!!

I can't afford to train in both systems so does anybody have any advice for and or against either. And most importantly what client feedback on either you may wish to share........

From a very confused old timer :rolleyes:

Claire.

Hi
Shellac is new technology, and is combining the properties of nail enamel and gel.
this allows it to be applied to a shiney nail,(no removal of shine) and it genuinly soaks off in 10 mins, leaving a shiney nail plate.

Bio sculpture is a GEL, which like all gel systems requires the removal of shine from the natural nail and contrary to the blurb, it take 30 mins to soak off.

I feel there is a place in the salon for both shellac and soak off gels, it will depend on your clients needs.

The only clients that we find struggle with Shellac are clients with very thin delicate nail plates. we apply a thin layer of gel on the nails that are struggling to grow, then use Shellac over all 10 nails.

If you are a gel technician already, then this is a good option.

If not, and you only want to perform overlays then mayb coloured gel is better for you.

However, the storm that had been gathered around the sucess of Shellac as a concept will take some beating!

Hope that helps

I love both products.

Biosculpture, for me, also soaks off in 10-15 minutes, in even less time if I use Exective Base pre application. Biosculpture, in my opinion, has the option to accommodate those clients who need additional strength to their nails. Most of my Biosculpture clients have them re-done every 4 weeks.

Shellac is great if a client just wants a groomed, non-chip effect which will last 2-3 weeks. I find Shellac doesn't have the flexibility of Biosculpture. Shellac is quicker and easier to apply.

Since you are already trained in Beauty, Shellac would be the cheaper option for you. You also wouldn't need training to apply it if you already can apply polish well.:)

Thank you ladies,

I was considering both as I agree they would compliment each other very well, I was just a little worried thinking that I may have just been getting carried away in the excitment of getting up and running again.

Thanks you for the advice :)

Hi I have trained in Bio and you dont need to take the shine off the natural nail it does last for 3-4 weeks and I find it does soak off in 10 mins if you have not applied it too thick!
I have also got the shellac which is also fab but doesnt last as long and again is not as strong as you can only do a nno where as bio you can extend.
It would be cheaper to start with shellac (if you can get the stock and lamp) and see how you get on and if you feel your clients need more then invest in bio :) Good Luck

HIya
My first post on here. What did yiu decide to go for in the end? I'm only in my second week of training, not even seen a nail yet so no idea what either biosculpture or shellac are. Would someone mind giving me a bit more detail? Thanks in advance:hug:

All the details are here on the site if you use the SEARCH option above. So much has been written about all these different systems and there is plenty to read without re-inventing the wheel :lol: if you know what I mean. Welcome to salon geek and to the world of nails, and have fun learning.

Here's a bit more information for you. Shellac video

same as me. I am a massive fan of both systems!

I have had a lot of students for Shellac training over the last year and many of them have been using numerous coloured gel systems incl bio and axium.
The only thing i want to add to my previous post is that, Shellac colours give complete opaque coverage with 2 thin coats of colour along with thin base and top coats, it genuinely looks like enamel.

In a lot of coloured gel applications the coats have to be applied with a brush and to achieve complete opacity, there is definatly a regrowth ridge.
As with Shellac, all applications of coloured gel vary greatly from tech to tech, but i have seen lots of examples.

I do think that, as i said in previous post, there is room for gel overlay/extension where needed, and in most cases of natural nail care Shellac would be my 1st choice.

This is how I explain the difference to clients/students/journalists;

Nail enamel is Level 1:- easy on/easy off; client can remove at leisure; no
commitment; takes 24hrs to set completely & can
chip.

Shellac is Level 2:- easy on/easy off; no removal of shine/primer/bonder;
minimum commitment; zero dry time; 14+ day shine & no
chipping.
Minx falls into level 2 as well.

Soak-off gels level 3:- usual removal of shine/bonder or primer.Easy on (if
brush on) some remove easier than others; minimal
commitment; zero dry time; 14+ day shine & no
chipping.
eg. bio sculpture, gellish, geleration, calgel.

L&P & non soak
off gel is Level 4:-Removal of shine & some systems require primer/bonder.
Training needed to perfect application; professional
removal required; more commitment needed; capable of
complete transformations of weak, flat unshapely nails.
14-21 days longevity & immaculate wear.

I personally offer levels 1,2 & 4.
I do not have any gaps in my services and a thorough consultation is needed to find out which system suits which client.

case study 1;
Lady aged 60, avid gardener that doesnt like to wear gloves, likes a bit of length.
She had given up with enamel so we tried her on Shellac.
While she was on holiday, they were fabulous, however after a few weeks of daily gardening, her index finger & thumb on her right hand had a few chips.
After a long discussion, she was honest with me and admitted that she will never wear gloves, so we decided to raise her service to level 4, a L&P overlay, with gel top coat and enamel.
The reason for this was because she has weak natural nails so L&P is better for her than gel and the gel non-soak off top coat allows her to remove her enamel when she wants and it leaves her with shiney nails.
She only requires rebalances every 3-4 weeks due to her nails growing slowly.

case study 2;
Lady aged 55, professional that likes to wear colour on holiday and weekends but not in the week.
This client has been a manicure client for 15 yrs with us.
She nearly always smudges her enamel on leaving!
She has beautiful natural nail shape if a little dry.
After lots of discussion at her 2 weekly manicures, we have settled into a mix of Shellac when she has an important event and holidays, and enamel when she has more confrences to enable her to change her colour when she wishes.

If you are starting out in the industry, level 1&2 are the best options to start with.
Both systems are reasonably priced and require less training.
I have never had such a fast return on my money as with Shellac and Minx.
This way you can build up a good client base with somethng you are confident in.
L&P and gel (level 4) take more investment of both time and money. you can decide to do this while building your natural nail service.

While I understand the thought process of "I only want to do natural nail services", maybe its because I was at the end of the line when God dished out natural nail shape?!, but there at a lot of clients out there that need Level 4, myself included!

I hope some of this has been helpful, as you can see, I tend to write essay posts!

your post may seem like essays, but great way of explaining what suits the client best. many clients tend to follow what their friends may of had, without thinking whats best for them, I think im gonna use your level guide in future.:)
