A client booked a manicure and got a friend to look after her young baby whilst I was there. Towards the end, the baby got tetchy and wanted feeding. I asked if she wanted to feed the baby before I painted her nails but she said no, she thought it would be ok. The very second I finished, she shot off to feed the baby, asking her friend to bring it upstairs for her and left me to see myself out. The friend came down and said she'd smudges 2 nails unclipping her nursing bra. The friend then helped me take everything out to my car. I left!

I now feel really bad that I didn't offer to wait whilst she fed the baby (at least half an hour) and re-do the nails.

What would you have done????

I wouldnt worry about it too much, you did the right thing in asking if she wanted to feed the baby before you painted which she declined. To be honest shes probably just pleased to have been able to have some pampering being a new mum!
You could always give her a ring or drop her an email to see if she wants a complimentary free paint next week or something.

Sorry but no. She did the right thing there is no need to offer a freebie and I would certainly not want to wait for 30 minuted whilst the baby was fed before finishing the treatment.

I do not mean to sound harsh but if your running a business then a manicure is 40 minutes (or however long your appointment is) and that's it. We are not paid to sit there whilst our clients feed babies, answer telephone calls or do whatever else they feel is more important than continuing with thier treatment. Just because you ar mobile (and I'm guessing this is the case) does not mean that your time is theirs until they are done with you. If you were in a salon they would only have their alloted time and that's that.

You have done the right thing. You are not responsible for the condition of their lacquer once you have treated them if they cannot allow the recommended time for it to dry (in the nicest possible way of course).

Totally agree with everything you have just said!!

Yes I agree, she would have smudged them again and again that day. This is where the new gel polishes are going to take the country by storm. Gelish and Shellac and the others will revolutionise our industry and have been developed for women such as her with no time to wait for polish to dry! ;)

Thank you all for your replies

I did call my client later in the day and offer to go over to re-do the smudged nails. She said it was absolutely her fault they got smudged and she did not expect me to go back and do them! It made me feel better and she really appreciated what she saw as exceptional customer care!

Hopefully I'll see repeat business from this new client!

Thanks again everyone, you've made me feel I did the right thing
Jx
