hello there everyone, im pretty new on here so bare with me lol

ok i recently opened my own barber shop in a small village but with plenty of clientel its been going great. thing is i dont do appointments its quick in and out thing as i no men are impatient lol ( sorry guys) its a village where people wont pay alot so i have kept my prices quite low but average. is there any ideas how to bring promotions in as i no there are some great ones for ladies salons. iv thought of oap's day but my oaps are cheap anyway.... id be great for any ideas thanks Anna

I have some great ideas if you would like to hear them, they involve spending a bit of money though. I opened a Barbers once in a Village and it was rubbish, nothing like a Town as most of the blokes in it were at work. Btw if its going well why do you need promotions are you being entirely honest here?

yeah it would be great to hear them if you wouldnt mind, yeah the villagers tend to go out of the village for shopping ect and its not a running through village although there are a few villages and towns within 3miles, yeah most men work but there are plenty of OAP's, men who dont work if you know what i mean, it is goin well but its the quiet days, beginings of weeks, it could be alot better but i am very pleased with how it is goin iv been open 8month now im just looking for ideas as example 2day i had around 9people in wich is a quiet day for being open 9-5 hope u understand thenks x

Hi Do you do shaving, it is really growing in popularity , we recently had our staff trained by a great trainer, Mark Sproston, and our customers love it now. We decided to do it free for a few weeks to introduce shaving while staff training, went down very well. PM me for the training companies name and url if required
regards
Jon

Isn't the Insurance unbelievably high for shaving though? Last time I looked the premium was really ridiculous.

MENS CONDITIONING TReATMENTS AND HEAD MASSAGE! used to have loads of men come into the unisex salon -geared for mostly women though they love it!

advertising head massages sounds good although the place where i live im not sure there is a big demand for it but its worth a try, how much would you charge?

i havnt looked into shaving as much as covering insurance etc. yeah im wondering how much the insurance is? is there a demand for the shaving?

I'll be honest and say that there is not, with all the blokes we have ever done we have never had anyone ask for it. However we did enquire about it and was advised of the cost of insurance that would go with it, it was not worth it.

Tell you what though, here is a corker of an idea that I did personally. My 1st Salon was a Barbers and I desperately wanted to do something myself, then it came to me!!! Ear-Piercing, it seemed to go really Hand in Hand with the Barbers and was a real instant hit. The course I did was a right laugh and it was so easy, very well priced to. Give that a whirl if you don't already do it!

Hi,

I would just like to answer a concern I have seen in this thread with reference to the insurance costs to introduce 'wet shaving' into your business.

My company has now trained approx 350 establishments (salons, spa's and barbers) over the last 2 years of how to use the 'cut throat razor' and more importantly introduce this great service and treatment to your male clients and we haven't had one client who has had an issue with insurance costs or a decline to the treatment on the insurance policy. The majority of insurers have also kept the insurance premium at the same level without an increase as long as you let them know you are introducing it so that the treatment can be added to the policy.

If any of our clients (1%) have struggled with their current insurer then we have recommended ours, Towergate (HISCOX GROUP) who specialise in the beauty industry.

With reference to popularity, I think the number of establishments we have trained says it all and we are booked up until the end of October 2008....Your gents won't ask for it if they don't know it is on offer!!

I would suggest you have a look at both our websites The Shave Doctor and ShaveSchool Home for more details.

I hope this helps ease any concerns some people may have and turn around their perception of the ever growing male grooming market.

thanks for your reply fitz, that is a great idea! a couple of questions though, how do you find out about the course? is it a reasonable price? and what sort of equipment do you need? anna x

Ok this is what I done:

1. 1st off I contacted this Company: home.gif

2. I then found out where exactly they was doing courses - Usually you can find them at your local Hairdressing Wholesalers. We found they was doing one at our local SALLY's and they were easily the cheapest.

3. It was then a matter of booking the course, passing it (which is so easy) and then Buying the kit. Here's a good price for it:
home.gif I actually paid more than this for ours.

4. You will then need to contact your local Council and inform them that you are going to be doing ear-piercing. make sure you do this as you could end up in serious poo if you don't.

All in all to set up it was very easy and hardly cost a lot either. One thing I will say which I thought was important at the Course, I found out that when I attended most of the people there were employees. To me that was bloody stupid i.e. So they pass, a few weeks later they leave the Salon and take their Certificate and skill from the Course with them. The owner then as to send someone else on a course. With that, if you are the Owner of the Salon or Shop thats going to be doing it then go yourself. That way the Certification, kit and the fact you can do Ear-Piercing stays with you. Don't cough at that either, when you do your 1st set you will see its the easiest £15-20 you'll ever earn. Infact its a great little earner all round.

Hi Anne
We had Shave school do our training, Mark was great and so enthusiatic..we were doing hot towel wet shaves in 2 days! Most things you need are already in the salon, add a razor (provided for training), brush and bowl, white high quality towels (holds the heat), towel heater or microwave (to start) and sharps box.
Then you need to find victims...sorry models... to practice on
Joking aside we found it easy to get models, guys like to have a bit of fuss and attention! TIP! Always say it is the second day of training to get models never the first

thanks for that, im defo going to look into it. i have hear you cant pierce any other body part apart from the ear lobe with the gun? what do you think? it seems pretty easy, thanks alot

I used to do cut throat shaving years ago and still do dads head now and again.

I am re-introducing it but was told that few companies touch wet shaving with cut throat razors. If you use a normal razor with wire guards though you have no problems at all.

Danial Rourah is an excellent barber and he teachs people this using normal razors.

It would be cool to learn both though.

A suggestion - after every 5 you get one free - or similar? My salon uses a great software called Platinum which keeps check of this - even for just walk ins! You can also use the system to emessage any promotions and special offers, the men will love it!!

If you want to take a look you can find them at www.salonsoftwaresystem.com
