I have a client who want and all over tan but she has still has the remains of a tan from being away on holiday - ie white bikini marks (to and bottom). How do you get over this to end up with an even tan? Do you do an initial spray over the white areas first, and then do a full body, or will the tan skin evenly regardless?

Hi Hun,

In my opinion and whilst I have been in the business it is very hard to get rid of any white tan marks, as you tend to always end up with the residue white marks still lighter than the remaining tanned flesh. What does your client want from her tan, does she want her white marks blended in. It is very difficult to achieve and will be alot of time on your part. Discuss with her the options but don't guarantee that you can do it, I always advise clients that I cannot get rid of strap marks etc.

Let me know how it goes, would be interested

The melanocytes that cause the browning in a sun tan reside in the bottom layer of the epidermis (the stratum basale); whereas the DHA in spray tans reacts with the top layer (the stratum corneum) to give the brown colour; therefore there is very little chance of the spray tan interfering with the underlying sun tan.

I would agree that attempting to blend the spray tan in to cover the white marks would be a pretty fruitless exercise; even if possible to do at the time of the spray tanning, there is no guarantee that the sun tan would fade at the same rate as the top layer of skin exfoliating off, so within a few days the tan line would almost certainly be visible again...

I agree with the above. The dark areas will always go darker than the white areas. Maybe do her tan as usual one day then get her in the day after and just go over the white areas, however that may be a little tricky. Just an idea i may be wrong, but im sure someone will correct me if i am wrong. :)

Thanks for all your replies... it's interesting to hear how others deal with this.

Ruth - thanks your explanation makes complete sense and will certainly help with any clients who have unrealistic expectations.
